Trooper Shot In Head By 79-Year-Old Man

The Indiana State Police trooper who was shot in the head on Tuesday is expected to make a full recovery.

Jeffersonville, IN – An Indiana State Police (ISP) trooper who was shot in the head by a suspected drunk driver on Tuesday night is expected to make a full recovery, police said.

The incident took place just after 7 p.m., when Trooper Morgenn Evans stopped a gray 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup for a traffic violation, FOX News reported.

Investigators said that the driver, 79-year-old Oscar Kays, became combative during the traffic stop.

Kays then pulled a gun, and shot Trooper Evans in the head, police said

After he was shot, Trooper Evans returned fire, and then he briefly pursued Kays, who fled the scene in his pickup.

Kays ultimately escaped.

Trooper Evans contacted dispatch at 7:08 p.m. and said that shots had been fired, and that he was hit, WAVE reported.

Additional police units flooded the area, and Kays was quickly apprehended at his residence.

Trooper Evans was rushed to a local hospital.

Fortunately, the bullet fired by Kays had only grazed Trooper Evans’ head, police said. He is expected to survive.

Trooper Evans has been with the state police since October of 2016.

"Our ISP family appreciates all the prayers overnight concerning Trooper Evans," ISP Public Information Officer Sergeant Todd Ringle wrote on Twitter. "He is expected to make a full recovery."

Kays was also transported to the hospital for medical evaluation, although ISP did not say how the man was injured. He was released and charged with the attempted murder of a police officer.

"At this time it is unknown if Trooper Morgenn Evans' shots wounded Oscar Kays, or if he was wounded by his own gun or debris from the shots fired," the ISP said in a press release, according to WAVE.

Kays was being held at the Clark County Jail.

I wonder if there were drugs involved, or if the man has some sort of dementia.
