Kirby, Texas - A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was shot when he was attacked at his home during a home invasion Thursday night.
According to CBS Austin, the unidentified trooper was at home with his wife when he heard something in his back yard at around 11:45 PM. The quick-thinking trooper strapped on his body armor and grabbed his gun.
As the trooper went outside to investigate, he was attacked by a man who tried to force his way inside of the home. The two got into a struggle over the trooper's gun, and the suspect was able to point it at the trooper when it fired a shot.
Thankfully the bullet struck the trooper's body armor, stopping the bullet.
After the shot, the suspect ran away and he is still on the loose.
The trooper was transported to this hospital to be evaluated and he should be fine.
The Texas Rangers are leading a manhunt for the suspect with assistance from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, San Antonio Police Department, and Kirby Police Department.
If this trooper hadn't been mindful enough to wear his body armor, he may not have survived this incident. There's also no telling what would have happened if the trooper hadn't noticed that somebody was in his back yard, and stopped the suspect before he was able to enter.
No information is available of the trooper had anything in front of his house which may have identified him as a law enforcement officer, but at this time there's nothing to indicate that he was targeted in the home invasion due to his profession.
