Austin, TX – A lifelong gun owner voluntarily surrendered his AK-47 to police after watching news coverage about mass shootings in his state.
“I’m going to go in, let them know I’m surrendering my firearm and it's an assault weapon,” he told KTBC. “We need to get them off the streets. I need to get mine off the streets. I can only speak for myself and pray for everyone else.”
The man, identified only as “Billy,” said he has been considering surrendering his rifle for a while.
“The massive shootings, all the lives, all the blood is hard to ignore,” he told KTBC. “I’m trying to make a safer place for you and me and my grandbabies.”
Before he surrendered the weapon, Billy made a video of him smashing the gun with a sledgehammer, KTBC reported.
“Enough said,” he quipped in the video.
After Billy showed up at the Austin Police Department to hand over his firearm, an officer escorted him back to his vehicle and took possession of the gun.
Billy said that Congress isn’t acting fast enough to take away citizens’ gun rights.
“I don't need them to pass a law to let me know what's right, necessarily, in a case like this that's so plain,” he declared. “I mean, the time is now.”
He said he hopes other citizens will follow his lead.
“If anyone else is wondering what to do with their assault rifles, this is one option,” the now-former gun owner told KTBC.
“I would encourage anyone that is in my position to do the same,” Billy preached. “It's not easy. It takes a lot more thought and a lot more courage to do this than it was to buy it.”
