Milwaukee, WI - At a press conference on Monday, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke talked about the Terry Williams shooting by a deputy at a Milwaukee park on Sunday night. Terry Williams, was identified as a suspect from a drive-by shooting on Saturday.
After the deputy shot Williams, a large crowd of hecklers formed to harass the officers on scene and claim that they killed two people, although both suspects are currently alive.
The shooting occurred at around 7:40 PM Sunday evening at Lincoln Memorial Drive and E. Water Tower Drive. Milwaukee County Sheriff's Deputies had attempted to stop a vehicle for running a stop sign when the vehicle took off. The deputies were pursuing the SUV and it drove up onto the median during the pursuit.
Deputy Michael Traux was on foot patrol in the area, and video showed the deputy open fire as the vehicle was driving down the median.
The reason for the shooting hasn't been confirmed, but the video shows that vehicle did appear to swerve directly at the deputy who opened fire; an official statement has not been released about the justification for the shooting.
The driver, Terry Williams, 19, was shot along with a passenger identified only as Paula. Williams is currently on life-support at Froedtert Hospital and Paula has non life-threatening injuries.
A 9mm pistol was recovered from the vehicle.
Immediately after the shooting, a large crowd gathered on scene to heckle officers as they were working an active scene. Word quickly spread on social media that the police just killed either one or two people.
Former state Rep. Mandela Barnes (D-Milwaukee) tweeted, "Crazy scene at the Lakefront. One person left dead after office involved shooting." All suspects are currently alive.
Law enforcement eventually forced everybody out of the park area and the crowd dissipated. People are talking about more protests on social media, but the response is likely to be affected by what details are released on Monday.
In his press conference on Monday, Sheriff Clarke noted that Terry Williams had a criminal history and was the suspected driver in a drive-by shooting that occurred on Saturday at JAD Foods near 58th and Silver Spring.
Deputy Michael Traux has been placed on leave while the shooting is being investigated and Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation.
