New Orleans, LA – A juvenile attempted to carjack a Louisiana State Police trooper in an unmarked police car on Thursday night.
Authorities said a dark-colored vehicle pulled up beside the trooper and a juvenile got out and then tried to enter the unmarked police car. Police did not reveal whether the juvenile was carrying a weapon when he attempted to break into the vehicle.
The state trooper fired his gun, and the suspect jumped back into the dark-colored vehicle and fled.
Police said the juvenile suspect was charged with attempted carjacking, and an outstanding burglary warrant from Orleans Parish, The Times-Picayune reported.
The juvenile suspect was booked into the New Orleans Juvenile Justice Center.
Loyola University student Sophia Roca, 19, told The Times-Picayune that she was hanging out on a front porch nearby with friends when they heard two gunshots. She said she saw a small dark-colored car drive off.
"Of course, we just freaked out and went inside and turned the lights off," Roca said. She said that her group of friends stayed hidden in their house until after police arrived on the scene.
Witnesses said the area was filled with lots of police from multiple departments who were interviewing witnesses, many of whom appeared to be students at local universities.
The Louisiana State Police said that neither the state trooper nor the juvenile suspect were injured in the incident.
Police have not released the name of the juvenile who was arrested, or the identity of the trooper who shot at him.
