Starbucks CEO Closing Stores For A Day To Train Employees On 'Unconscious Bias'

The CEO of Starbucks has said that all store employees will go for special training.

Philadelphia, PA – The manager of the Starbucks who called the police on two black men who refused to leave the coffee shop no longer works there, and the CEO of Starbucks will be sending all of his store managers to special training so nothing like that happens again.

“I will fix this,” Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said in a videotaped message, according to The Washington Post.

To that end, the company announced Tuesday that it will shut 8,000 Starbucks stores on May 29 to educate employees about racial bias, WITI reported.

Two black men were arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks on April 12 after an employee called police to have them removed.

The men were real estate brokers who were waiting on a third friend for a business meeting before they ordered their coffee, and one of them asked to use the restroom.

A Starbucks’ employee said that it is company policy to refuse the use of restrooms to non-customers, and then asked the two men to leave. When they refused, the police were called.

Several cellphone videos captured the tense moment when at least six Philadelphia police officers responded to the store and asked the two seated black men to leave, The Washington Post reported.

When the men did not comply with the officers’ request, they were arrested and held until Starbucks told them that they no longer wanted to press charges, according to The Washington Post.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross has said the police officers who made the arrests did “absolutely nothing wrong.”

Commissioner Ross said the officers followed policy, were professional in all their dealings with the two men, and only arrested them after they had refused three police requests to leave.

"It is important to emphasize and underscore that these officers had legal standing to make this arrest," Commissioner Ross said. "Again, they were called to the scene because employees said that they were trespassing. It is important for me to say, in short, that these officers did absolutely nothing wrong. They followed policy. They did what they were supposed to do. They were professional in all their dealings with these gentlemen, and instead, they got the opposite back."

“I can tell you that that police officer did not want to have to make an arrest in that incident. The whole thing, we just wish it didn't happen,” Commissioner Ross told WPVI.

The commissioner said he’d been talking directly to the CEO of Starbucks to have them reevaluate their company’s policies. He also said the incident underscored the need for more bodycams for his department.

"I'll say the circumstances surrounding the incident and the outcome at our store on Thursday were reprehensible," Johnson said in an exclusive interview ABC's Good Morning America on April 16.

"They were wrong, and for that, I personally apologize to the gentlemen that visited our store,” he said.

According to Starbucks, the manager of the store where the arrests took place was no longer working there at the 18th and Spruce Streets store in what the company called a “mutual” decision, ABC reported.

Johnson said that some situations warrant a call to police, such as threats or disturbances, but that in this case, “it was completely inappropriate to engage the police,” The Washington Post reported.

Starbuck Chief Operating Officer Rosalind Brewer called the arrests a “teachable moment for all of us.”

“It would be easy for us to say that this was a one-employee situation, but I have to tell you, it’s time for us to, myself included, take personal responsibility here and do the best that we can to make sure we do everything we can,” Brewer said, according to The Washington Post.

Johnson met with the men who had been arrested on Monday in a private meeting to issue his apology.

Excellent. Glad to see that the CEO is trying to mend the situation and move forward. Its good to acknowledge racism rather than stick your head in the ground and pretend otherwise. If there wasn't a racism issue, this event wouldn't have happened.

The police did what they were supposed to do.

So are they opening their bathrooms? When the place is overrun with those hanging out, paying customers will leave.

Overrun with those hanging out?.. These gentlemen never had a chance to be paying customers.. They were waiting for a friend who was running late. Have you never had a brunch or coffee date with friends, one is late and one of your party has to use the bathroom? This was clearly a racial issue. I'm happy to see that the CEO is trying to get something done, but you can't fix stupid.

Looking for an place to loiter just became easy. Hopefully the homeless are equally as welcome.

I just know that most people would have gone ahead and ordered their coffee and sipped while waiting on the late one. It's not rude to go ahead and order, and I expect those I am meeting to do that if I get caught at work or in traffic. Most people know that the restrooms are for paying customers. If you don't buy within a few minutes after entering the store, you don't take up table space or use the restrooms. I have stopped on the road at Starbucks, ordered then went to the restroom while waiting for my order so that they know that I am a paying customer not just stopping there for the clean restrooms....except once when I didn't have time to order first and let them know I would be there in a minute. It's what used to be common sense, but has become uncommon sense.

Really??? You cannot go into a business and LOITER... no matter what your race color or gender of the day is... There is nothing to mend... its just another attempt by the left to get attention... I wouldn't doubt it if it was all staged actually...

they own over 2000 stores, this was one store and one manager... please explain how you sit in a store buy nothing and expect to stay as long as you like..... taking the seats away from paying customer...... then asked to you leave because you are not a customer..... this was staged

I wonder how Starbucks reacts when the homeless decide to set up camp in their stores. Nothing better than some homeless person who hasn't showered in a month sitting down with paying customers. In fact maybe I'll help set up an event where I bus in 20 or so homeless people to use their restrooms and to loiter in the stores. I sure hope they're consistent with their new policy and don't discriminate against these fine people.

I see there has been no apology from Starbucks for putting the officers in that situation. I would boycott them if I wasn't already avoiding their overpriced coffee.

Real estate agents waiting for a business client???? Dressed in black hooded sweatshirts???? Seriously??? If the manager called the police, told them the “gentlemen” were trespassing and wanted them removed, then the police just did their job. Effecting an arrest based on the complainant’s statement that they were trespassers and that the complainant would sign the complaint. When Starbucks refused to sign the complaint, the “gentlemen” were let go. Bad situation for Starbucks...............basis for a false arrest suit.

So we have two people who lost there jobs because they were doing what the policy called for; the officers did what they were trained to do, their boos backed them but the Starbucks boss fired them, There was nothing racist here, It was at best a misunderstanding. The two men waiting could have ordered a coffee or put their order in and said wait to deliver it when 3rd person arrived. A popular restaurant here in Seattle will not even seat you if all your party is not present. No one complains about that. It's simply a policy. Get a life. I'm sick of the petty racist card.

No, it is not clearly a racial issue. For it to be clearly a racial issue, there has to be some hard piece of evidence to prove that the original intent was to be racist.

What the two arrested men were saying, is that they’re real estate agents waiting for a business client, before they could place their order.

It just seems like a lot of the details make this not as racist as people are blowing it up to be. For one, these were the most underdressed real estate agents I’ve ever fucking seen in my life. I have family in real estate, and you weren’t going catch them dead doing business in anything other than business attire. Maybe jeans if it’s an emergency meeting. But they still look the part.

I’m wondering if the manager was made aware that they intended to order. I also wonder if they had exchanged words. Sometimes you have managers and staff that have a chip on their shoulder, and want to be draconian for the sake of self reassurance.

what an idiot starbucks ceo is. I feel exactly as leo301. I wish to hell our country would get back to common sense. Business is overrun by homeless using bathrooms, stepping over the od bodies, the feces due to clogged toilets etc etc. A business must be able to control their own premises. The manager did exactly what store policy were..

Lex450
Lex450

Business can ask you to leave anytime. Doesn't matter if you're a paying customer or not. Race had nothing to do with this. There's no video footage displayed when they entered the store and their interactions with the stores employees. So rather than just assume what happened let's stick with the facts. The business said they asked them to leave to which they refused to do so. I.E. they were then trespassing.
