Three Forks, MT - A Broadwater County Sheriff's Office Deputy was murdered Tuesday morning near Three Forks.
The unnamed deputy was pursuing a vehicle on highway 287 at around 3 AM when dispatch suddenly lost contact with him. Montana Highway Patrol and Gallatin County deputies responded and found the hero dead on the side of the road.
Investigators later found the deputy's patrol car in a ditch a couple of miles south of the Town Pump station, according to Bozeman Daily Chronicle. They used the dash camera footage to identify the suspects' vehicle.
Officers located the suspects' SUV in Butte-Silver Bow county near Anaconda, and they pursued the vehicle before spiking it in Powell County. The SUV continued traveling west on flattened tires until it stopped just east of Rock Creek.
The passenger got out of the vehicle and opened fire at officers. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect. No officers were hurt in that gunfight.
The shooter's father, who was driving the vehicle, was taken into custody without further incident. The shooter has been hospitalized for his bullet wounds.
A total of six counties were involved in the pursuit, with Broadwater, Gallatin, Park, Madison, Missoula and Lewis and Clark county deputies working to take the killer into custody, as well as Montana Highway Patrol.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the fallen hero and his family.
