Seattle Cop Fired for 'Inappropriate' Political Social Media Posts

Seattle police fired an officer after an anonymous source complained about his political rants on Instagram.

Seattle, WA – A Seattle police officer was fired for posting profane and politically-charged comments, including rants against illegal immigration, on his Instagram.

An internal investigation determine that the officer violated the department’s social media policy with the rants and a post that “appeared to endorse violence” against former President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, the Seattle Times reported.

"I don't condone sending package bombs but god it would be nice for Killary and Anti cop Obama to finally STFU,” the officer captioned an Instagram post that showed a picture of Obama and Clinton together, the Seattle Patch reported.

The Seattle Police Department began investigating in 2018 after somebody who knew the officer filed an anonymous complaint about his social media posts with the Office of Police Accountability (OPA).

The person complained that several of the officer’s posts were “unprofessional” and "not becoming of a Seattle PD officer," the Seattle Patch reported.

She also complained that numerous posts carried hashtags such as #maga and #trump2020 that were giving him a wide audience, the Seattle Times reported.

"If you support illegal immigrants coming into our country so much then make a difference and bring them into your home and YOU support them you [expletive]!" the officer, who used the IG handle @officerdg, captioned a picture of himself giving the middle finger, KOMO reported.

The account has since been made private.

The investigation and its finding were detailed in a summary report posted by OPA on Wednesday, the Seattle Patch reported.

OPA investigators determined that the officer’s posts violated Seattle Police Department policies on bias-free policing, social media speech, and professional standards, KOMO reported.

However, OPA Director Andrew Myerberg said that the officer didn’t necessarily engage in biased policing and the officer would have been referred for retraining had he not been terminated for the other infractions, the Seattle Patch reported.

But Myerberg said the social media posts were in fact violations of the social media policy and the department’s professional standards.

"This is due to the fact that he appeared to endorse violence against political figures in one posting and, in the other, engaged in a profanity laced critique both of 'illegal immigration' and of those individuals who may support a different political position on this issue than he holds," the OPA director wrote.

The officer admitted, before he was fired, that his Instagram posts “negatively impacted the Department’s ability to serve the public, as well as that the postings were unprofessional,” the Seattle Times reported.

But he also told police that his criticism of illegal immigration was a comment on the practice, not specific individuals, the Seattle Patch reported.

Settle Police Chief Carmen Best was the one who made the final decision to terminate the officer.

Police officials have not yet released the now-former officer’s name or the date of his termination, but Seattle Police Sergeant Sean Whitcomb said they will be releasing more information soon.

LEO, when will you learn there are people out there just waiting for the opportunity to crucify you? Keep your social media rants private, don't give them ammunition against you.
That being said, this is the grand old U.S of A., not a soviet bloc, freedom of opinion is an ingrained right and should NOT cost anyone his ability to earn a living if his record meets the standards required by his profession. What he does and thinks on his own time is his business.

""If you support illegal immigrants coming into our country so much then make a difference and bring them into your home and YOU support them you [expletive]!" the officer" What is wrong with this post????

Well, he did violate the social media policy, so I guess it's a legit termination.....

does that mean that anyone who speaks badly about the current president on social media should also be terminated from their position of employment? after all, if it's conduct unbecoming to speak bad about the dems, it should be a terminable offense to speak badly about the republicans?

And officers, remember: this also means that if your personal political views offend someone, they can file a complaint and get your terminated from your employer

It's good that civilians monitor law enforcement social media. If you believe there are people that specifically watch law enforcement social media posts to catch them showing who they really are, you're completely right.

Social media posting contrary to dept. rules is within the domain of the employer to handle. That is what each employee agreed to when signing their contract, so, yes there is a need to be aware of obligations in that regard. LEO owe the populace his/her professional commitment to be the best LEO possible within the professional requirements of the job. They DO NOT OWE ANYONE THEIR SOULS. To suggest that LEO sould be denied the expression of a personal opinion is a ludicrous violation.

If you're a LEO and you're using your real name / pictures of yourself on social media, you're too dumb to be a LEO.

I honestly feel sorry for LEOs. It's bad enough you have to risk your life for a public that has no respect or sympathy for them, but they can't spout off about it without getting fired. If you are a cop, there is no such thing as free speech and a right to privacy.

Seems like people in power are trying to stop free speech an I think a good lawyer can make them pay

Its very well and good that this man was fired. If he proved anything, its that he wasn't smart enough to be a police officer. An officer is not only supposed to be brave, bold and to uphold the law, he supposed to be smart. Any officer who is dumb enough to make political rants and wish violence on individuals, specific or non specifically needs to be sacked. LEO's clearly don't have the same First Amendment protections because of their careers and the first amendment doesn't protect violent speech.

Leftist politicians incite violence and are against law enforcement and if anyone disagrees with them, it's water under the bridge and they still have their jobs. George Lopez put a bounty on Trump's head and people just laughed it off. If that post was against Pelosi, they would be screaming arrest him for treason. Why aren’t they held to the same standards as the opposition?

Do I think it was dumb that he violated company policy and posted in bad taste with the mailbomb? Of course! But on the other hand, we ALL have 1st Amendment rights and it should pertain to everyone, not just the left.

The Seattle police department didn't even know what to do so they sought out the advice of the secret service, which did not recommend termination of his employment, but Seattle being far left decided to take it in their own hands and fired him and then went on to say that his political beliefs in no way hindered his duties as an unbiased police officer. How can they praise the work he does and fire him in the same sentence? It's a shame that the high standards only apply to conservatives and Republicans.
