School Pulls Out Of American Legion Coloring Contest Over 'Inappropriate' Image

Glen Rock schools informed their local American Legion post that the image for this year's contest was "inappropriate."

Glen Rock, NJ – Military veterans said they felt disrespected after a New Jersey school district opted not to participate in an annual American Legion coloring contest because school administrators didn’t approve of this year’s picture.

The coloring page is titled “The Four Pillars of the American Legion” and features soldiers in 1919, 1965, and 2019 military uniforms carrying guns appropriate for that period in history.

An unarmed nurse in a 1941 uniform is also featured, along with a banner honoring the centennial anniversary of the American Legion.

The picture also has a POW/MIA logo and a “battlefield cross,” which is a pair of boots with a rifle standing up and a helmet hanging off it. It is used to symbolize a soldier killed in the line of duty.

The New Jersey American Legion puts on the Americanism Award coloring contest for fourth and fifth grade students around the state ever year, according to the North Jersey Record.

But this year, Glen Rock Public Schools informed American Legion Post 145 that they felt the picture to be colored was “inappropriate” because of the guns in the image.

American Legion Post 145 Vice Commander Ken Frank said that Hamilton School had contacted the post and told them that unless they changed the image, their students wouldn’t be participating in the competition, the North Jersey Record reported.

“We are very upset, and we feel disrespected,” Frank said. “There wasn’t any reason given, and there hasn’t been another school in the state, that we’ve heard of, that’s refused to use the picture.”

Glen Rock Schools Superintendent Bruce Watson said it was a district-wide decision, the North Jersey Record reported.

Glen Rock Board of Education President Sharon Scarpelli said that the decision was made by the school administrators, who then informed the school board.

“The administration had asked if they could be provided with a different picture. They were concerned over the display of guns in the picture," Scarpelli explained in an email to the North Jersey Record.

New Jersey American Legion Adjutant John Baker said that Glen Rock is the first school district to voice any concern about the contest picture.

Baker said the American Legion has no plans to change the picture because they are a veterans’ organization and the objection is to a coloring page depicting military members in uniform, the North Jersey Record reported.

Heroes are inappropriate when they carry weapons, huh? I didn't know that. I guess they only count professional athletes as heroes. Maybe they would feel better if our military (and police, since they carry guns also) were armed with only teddy bears, crayons, and lollipops.

Was the school unaware that the military owns guns?

I guess a Howitzer in the background would be a no-no as well as a battleship with really big guns.

Oh for the love of everything holy, they're SOLDIERS.

Speaking of guns on this, slight historical technical point: It appears the WW1-era soldier is holding a Short-Magazine Lee Enfield rifle that was in common use with British and Commonwealth armies. The US was using the Springfield 1903 at that time if memory serves.

Oh good Lord! Would they rather those soldiers be wearing tutu's and carrying flowers?

These Administrators would rather see our military caring a white flag of surrender. They are nauseating and should not be allowed to be near the youth of America

Since the US is developing into a 3rd world toilet, the image in question might be acceptable to the school administration if the soldiers were carrying machetes and spears instead of those offensive guns.

You may as well teach these children now that there are now such things as safe zones and life really does happen and is very real and that their own freedom, just as that of their liberal teachers was paid for by men and women with rifles, bayonets, knives, grenades, rocks, and sometimes just their bare hands. Yes kiddies, war and your freedom can be very brutal. Ask a vet, maybe you'll be lucky enough to find one who'll talk to you about it. I bet they find the Pledge of Allegiance offensive too.

Who cares, the point is that our children are now being taught/led by the "draft dodgers" of today. They went to school not to war. The parents should be mad as hell, I know I would be.

Truth of the matter is anti-gun advocates are actually anti-weapons advocates who feel resistance to criminal & violent behavior is antiquated, no evil, when in fact it is they who are wicked beyond imagination; God demanding criminals to be stopped in their tracks.

Disrespect towards one of the most solid organizations who is comprised of American Veterans and those who serve in its auxiliary. Mainly nothing but pure disrespect for the veterans who have served and who are serving by a bunch of misguided and irresponsible sheepies. This being in NJ we know the liberal strong hold and invested islamic sectors that are starting to control this state.

I served both in the military and civilian careers and find it more than laughable that those who protest guns are the first to scream cop when they are in danger, and the first to decry military intervention when the common good is at stake. Liberal leftists on a collision course with reality.

What's really sad is if a kid were to draw this patriotic picture in class, they would have an automatic expulsion.

This is exactly what is wrong in America today-- this "indoctrination" of our children in school--no prayer in schools, no "pledge of allegiance", "my" generation did not have what is happening in schools. There was respect for our teachers, who would have thought having the police "stationed" in the schools? Also, the "raising" of the children is done at home, not by teachers--so sad that this is what is going on in the world-- ( just a self opinion)

please, any serviceman correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't rifle issued with the uniform? making it part of the uniform? I'd like to see Pelosi fight off an enemy soldier, armed with a joke book instead of rifle

that way she could die laughing. as it is now, they might have to burry her with a bushel of lemons to maintain her usual "smile"

EVERY vet or spouse of a vet should go to the next school board meeting and demand that the leadership of the school be removed due to the fact that they are "inappropriate" to educate the youth of our great country!!! Where did the First Amendment come from ???? Not from the lack of guns and our military. The fact that those of us who served allows them to continue to have that right. If they do not want any guns go to Cuba and enjoy themselves.

PoohBear1

Why do I NOT find it hard to believe that this is happening...as a vet, the daughter of a vet, and the daughter-in-law of a vet I find this school district disgusting! They should be ashamed of themselves, and everyone involved should either resign, or be fired!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE can't imagine who i'd be talking to if you hadn't had your rifle, even an m9 would be no match due to limited distance no rifle, no security

leftTards ignore difference between right to own gun and illegal use of same... illegal use is overwhelmingly done with firearms that were illegal in first place. and while a few were not, citing those few never justifies outright ban. Thank God 2nd amendment is there to thwart such totalitarianism

As commander of American Legion Post 328, Norco, CA. I find it very hard not to start a expletive rant against that school. We support all veterans, and yes, many of us are either police officers or retired cops. Our district sponsors around 15 boys to go to boys state every year. We give out scholarships to students to attend college. We have a Christmas and Easter party for the needy children every year, and supply a Thanksgiving turkey and ham dinner to the community at no charge. Maybe the school should look up what the legion is about, not just honoring vets but supporting vets and their families, and the local community.

I'm confused, it's lawful to have a military force but not okay to show what they look like? I'm not trying to be funny, honestly hard to keep up when you don't follow stuff.
