School District Defends AP History Lesson Calling Trump A Nazi And Communist

Sandy Malone

Baltimore County schools are defending the use of a derogatory meme about President Donald Trump in AP history class.

Towson, MD – Baltimore County Public Schools are defending the use of a meme of President Donald Trump over a swastika and Soviet Union flag as part of the Advanced Placement (AP) history curriculum at Loch Raven High School.

The slide showed a picture of President Trump over the words “Wants to round up a group of people and build a giant wall,” WBFF reported.

Beneath the President was a picture of a swastika captioned “Been There” and flag of the former Soviet Union captioned “Done That.”

Handwritten, to the left of the meme, were the words “oh, THAT is why it sounds so familiar!”

Outraged parents told WBFF that the slide was put up during an AP history class and left up all day.

"I was told that by another student who said the topic in that class was supposedly world leaders shunning other groups out," one parent said. "I said, 'Is this part of the curriculum?'"

“The biggest problem is pushing an agenda on 16 year olds," the parent added.

The school district pushed back against assertions by outraged parents that such content was an attempt at political indoctrination.

Baltimore County Public Schools Spokesman Charles Herndon told the Associated Press that students in AP classes were “discerning, intelligent students who are going to be able to draw their own inferences and draw their own conclusions.”

"This slide was used as part of a lesson in an AP History course,” Baltimore County Schools told WBFF in a statement. “The topics being discussed included World Wars and the attempts by some leaders to limit, or prevent migration, into certain countries. In isolation and out of context with the lesson, the image could be misunderstood. In our Advanced Placement (AP) classes, which are college level courses, we expect and encourage analysis and discussion around historical and current events even if they are considered controversial. This lesson was not intended to make a political statement. If a student has concerns when discussing a controversial issue, schools have the tools to address the concern and support the student."

Local lawmakers were not impressed with the school district’s explanation.

"To even imply that our president is in any way a Nazi or a communist is outrageous,” Baltimore County Councilman Wade Kach told WBFF.

"Is this curriculum for AP?” Kach asked. “Is it a purchased curriculum? Is it one that our school system wrote? Where is it coming from? I just think that it’s irresponsible to post anything like this in a classroom."

Dr. Richard Vatz, a professor of political persuasion at Towson University, told WBFF he questioned the school district’s explanation of the context of the derogatory slide.

"If they’re not presenting that as clear, outrageous argument against the President of the United States, then they’re not doing their job,” Vatz said. “It’s really contemptible. But I want to say it's conceivable the teachers are doing a better job than has been communicated to you."

"High schools are not supposed to take advocacy positions against presidents,” the professor said. “They’re supposed to explain how political advocacy works, if that’s what they’re doing. They’re certainly not to take a position that the President is comparable to these awful leaders of the past."

Maryland State Delegate Kathy Szeliga has arranged for copies of the slide, as well as the Baltimore County schools’ responses to it, to be sent to her fellow Baltimore County lawmakers, the Associated Press reported.

“It is horrific. It is educational malfeasance,” Szeliga said.

Sorry guys, but the DEMS more closely fit THAT description. They are mostly Socialists and Socialist ARE Communist in hiding and Nazi were SOCIALISTS. Live with it.

Hitler: rounded up 'undesirable' people with the goal of purging and exterminating them from society.

Trump: lawfully detaining criminals who entered the country in clear violation of customs and immigration laws, with the goal of deporting them back to their countries of origin.

Stalin: built a wall to prevent defectors running to the west to escape his brutal regime, killed many who attempted it.

Trump: replacing an existing, but ineffective, border barrier to ensure people only cross at official points of entry.

Yeah, not the same thing.

Oh, and how can you be both a Communist and a Nazi at the same time since they are opposite political systems? Maybe they would do better to educate the students on the definitions of Socialism, Communism and Fascism?

Fire the teacher. If you can't teach students without injecting your personal biases, than you have no business teaching anyone anything.

All you had to say was “Baltimore”. Maybe in this day and age we will see a time when we can all express our own opinions without being attacked and told how to think.

"This lesson was not intended to make a political statement." What the heck was it then if it wasn't a "Political Statement? The goal of a teacher is to make kids THINK. Not to spoon feed BS to them. Just as the goal of a reporter is to REPORT what happens, not to make up more BS.

As much as I'm not fond of law suits, that is exactly what the parents should now do against the school district.

Just think of the implications of free college for all promised by some of the current Democratic candidates.

Basically, you will have all of America's youth, entitled to a free ride to study Art History or Basket Weaving for four years, live off of the taxpayers at prestigious universities costing $30k per year and up, and get indoctrinated by Liberal professors who will basically have guaranteed employment for life.

And when you make something guaranteed and "free" for everyone, what happens? The price natural skyrockets, because it it put into law that it is guaranteed. The quality also suffers, and the Universities will not be hiring their best qualified candidate professors; they will be looking people with pulses.

And you know darn well that they will lower standards, not requiring at a least a B average to maintain scholarship, not requiring crime-free behavior, and they will also give preference to certain ethnicities that tend to vote Democrat. It's just one more way to redistribute wealth and implement Socialism which destroys everywhere it takes root.

1/3 of Venezuelans are currently facing hunger, and 74% of families have had to change what they eat due to lack of money. It's what Socialism does everywhere it has been.

Meanwhile, currently in America, we have all-you-can-eat restaurants, and Universities that the rest of the world desires to attend.

Although tempting I prefer not to use Venezuela. They are the epitome of stupidity. They were the richest country on the continent (still are, in oil reserves) and managed to ruin their country anyway. It's easy to slap the socialism label over the stupidity, greed and corruption. A better example of failed socialism is the USSR, but most people under 30 have no idea what the Soviet Union was, or how it worked. they were a mighty country and NOT stupid. However their people were not free. Once the Berlin Wall came down there was much hardship adjusting to the free markets and the downfall of the communist state, (socialism and communism are essentially the same thing "United Soviet SOCIALIST Republic"). Yet look at Russia today, stronger than ever and Putin has the highest approval rating in the free world (87%).

Although, I can see what happened in Venezuela become a reality here, because the premise of socialism here is stupidity on wheels.

In this world there are no 100% comparable versions of a given politico-economic system. But, "Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro admitted that his socialist economic model has 'failed' amid food and medicine shortages as well as a failing infrastructure highlighted by Tuesday's power failure to 80% of Caracas." https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-08-01/venezuelas-maduro-admits-socialism-has-failed
A question: How much of Putin's popularity percentage is based on an unbiased poll of a wide and general cross section of his citizenry?

In 1998, Venezuela was the richest country in Latin America. Socialism destroyed it in only 20 years. A lot of what Bernie plans (take over of fossil fuel industry and huge increases in social programs) are just what Chavez did.

Coincidentally, Fox has an interesting article on it today...

I have wondered how the lib professors expect to be paid their tenure w/o end and their outrageous salaries along with those who board the universities if the communist/socialist/Marxist ideologies take over. Seems rather obvious their importance as teachers would be stripped for their opinions being firmly governed by the powers of the government controls...

"A lot of what Bernie plans (take over of fossil fuel industry and huge increases in social programs) are just what Chavez did."

Now THAT I did not know (the Bernie taking over the fossil fuel industry part).

I never listen to the liberals anymore. Listening to what they have to say just hurts my brain. All they do is pound the drum about what a terrible person Trump is (as they collect their taxpayer dollars, while he does not) and offer free shit to everybody.

I watch every debate, Dem or Republican in full. There is one tonight at 8:00 p.m. EST on CBS.

Bernie said last debate that he wants to tax and sue the pants off of the fossil fuel industry. Here is how he says, in his own words, he will pay for his new $40T in new spending. He even says electricity will be free after 2035, what a joke...

Looks like on Tuesday I will vote for the first Dem of my life. I am Republican, but I can vote in the VA Dem primary on Tuesday. There is no Republican primary Tuesday here.

I am strongly leaning towards voting for Bernie because

  • He has no chance against Trump
  • He has a great chance to become the Dem nominee
  • Others, like a Biden/Bloomberg ticket might have a chance against Trump.

If anyone has a better strategy, please advise. Everyone is on the VA Dem, including all the drop-outs - Booker, Castro, Sanders, Warren, Williamson, Bennet, Biden, Klobuchar, Gabbard, Patrick, Buttigieg, Yang, Steyer, Bloomberg.

I agree, he's a sideshow right now. The Deep State wants Biden. Biden will never recover from his kid's kickback job in the Ukraine. the 2020 election was decided once the Senate refused to allow witnesses. Interesting true story. I spoke on the phone to Bernie 15 years ago. He asked me what I thought the best thing for the country would be then. I told him to cap the Fed Rate at 3%. He replied "interesting". Then, after the meltdown the Feds have kept the rate near zero for years. Nothing hurts an economy worse that interest rates. Trump got pissed when the Feds kept raising it during his term..

Now, with the Coronavirus tanking the markets the Feds have no choice but to lower them and keep them low. This virus may be causing panic worldwide, but the death rate just doesn't justify the panic, except the death toll is the worst since the pandemic of 2018. It spreads easy and if it kills 1 in 50 that still represents many millions of people worldwide.

It is interesting to watch though.

The containment protocols seem to be crippling economies, businesses and life in general everywhere.

The one thing that struck me as wild, was the leader of the Iranian task force against the virus actually contracting it.

The say there are 50 some confirmed cases here in the US.

I suspect the real number is exponentially higher.

It's just another flu with a 3% fatality rate. Not really exceptional.

I don't remember everyone getting so worked up about SARS, MERS, H1N1, bird flu, and swine flu.

I hate to take advantage of the global hysteria and panic, but I've been buying a lot of stock. If the market drops more, I will buy more.

It will be interesting to see what Trump says tonight at 18:00 EST. If he says something about this thing going away one the weather gets warm in April, he will be ridiculed for it. But then you will see it start to go away in late March.

I live in Maryland. The city and county of Baltimore is a cesspool (remember the rat story a few months ago?). Fortunately I live east of the Chesapeake, where conservatives are in the majority. Unfortunately the liberal population of Baltimore is usually enough to carry the state for President and Senate offices. We are just a few steps behind California. I'd move to Wyoming if it wasn't for the winter weather.

Here's where the problems now start, the schools. Instead of learning math, science, and other subjects, the students are being taught how bad the President is. They are being taught how racist, whites are, and how brutal the police are. Instead of teaching needed subjects, many schools are now teaching liberal and Socialist/Communist views instead.

Never let facts get in the way of liberal rhetoric.

"Under the Obama administration, ICE deported more than 385,000 each year in fiscal years 2009 through 2011, and hit a high of 409,849 in fiscal 2012 — prompting critics to dub Trump’s predecessor “the deporter in chief.” The numbers then dropped to below 250,000 in fiscal years 2015 and 2016.

Under Trump, by comparison, ICE deportations dropped to 226,119 in fiscal 2017, then inched up to over 250,000 in fiscal 2018 and hit a Trump administration high of 282,242 this fiscal year, as of June, the website reported."

I wonder the reaction if a meme of Obama was shown to the students pointing out what he did during his reign of terror. Maybe one that showed a picture of Obama with a quote from his hope and change campaign BS and below that photos from the Ferguson riots with Brown's step father yelling out "burn this fucker down"! Then some pics of the three white house reps Obama sent to the funeral of Brown, the guy who committed a robbery then attempted to kill a police officer. Yep, hope and change....

"The school district pushed back against assertions by outraged parents that such content was an attempt at political indoctrination."

How about we teach actual history and not try to "indoctrinate" children that don't belong to you? This is more political propaganda being pushed by liberals in an attempt to brain wash children into believing their nonsense. during my children's education years, I had to fire off many emails or speak to teachers in regards to things like this. Most of the time I would put the line, "Keep your political views or opinion about firearms out of your curriculum and concentrate on teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. My children don't need your views pushed on them. Period!".

Why are these people not fired for ignorance as well as insensitivity. The teacher is supposed to be teaching an AP class but is showing that he knows no facts nor does he care that he is offending people who families were murdered by NAZI's and Communists. Neither of which is being done or suggested by Trump. It is the teacher using Brown Shirt techniques.

If you can't tell when Devil's Advocate is being used as a tool to teach then keep those blinders on and stay out of the classroom. Education can be messy and isn't always easy to swallow if you dont know the direction the syllabus is pointing. That could be nearly any leader on that picture.

I'd call this a weak attempt or improper try to capture attention/interest on the subject. It's easy to dump on a political target because it triggers some immediately. Next time use a historical image you stupid 'hip' teachers.
