Cumberland Police Officer Michael Petrarca shot-year-old Brennan Matthew Cronin after he was stabbed on Saturday.

Cumberland, RI – A Cumberland police officer is recovering after he was stabbed in the thigh by a suspect on Saturday.

The incident occurred at about 7 p.m. on May 9 when Cumberland Police Officer Michael Petrarca was patrolling the area near Cumberland High School, WPRI reported.

Officer Petrarca saw 24-year-old Brennan Matthew Cronin going through trash cans in the parking lot by the loading dock and went over to talk to him.

Cronin waited while the officer had dispatch run a warrant check on him, WPRI reported.

He didn’t have any warrants.

But then another officer who was investigating an incident at a nearby business asked the dispatcher over the radio what the suspect was wearing and Cronin heard him, WPRI reported.

Police said that was when Cronin tried to flee.

Officer Petrarca went after him and caught up after Cronin tripped and fell, according to WPRI.

But then Cronin stabbed the officer in the thigh with a large knife.

Then the suspect fled toward a residential area so Officer Petrarca shot him, WPRI reported.

“The officer saw the subject with the large knife in his hand and the officer was bleeding heavily from his leg wound,” police said, according to the Providence Journal. “The subject started to run towards a residential area. And the officer discharged his firearm, striking the subject in the left thigh.”

The officer was able to get back to his police vehicle and apply a tourniquet to his own leg before backup arrived.

Both Officer Petrarca and the man who stabbed him were transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment, WPRI reported.

Cronin was arraigned while he was still in his hospital bed.

He is facing charges of felony assault, assault on a police officer, and possession of a knife over 3 inches, according to WPRI.

Officer Petrarca was treated at the hospital and was expected to be released within a couple of days.

This is a great eye for an eye story: suspect stabs cop in the thigh so cop shoots suspect in the thigh.

That's what I call guts, after being stabbed, bleeding out and still able to stop the threat. He even stopped himself from bleeding out so help could get there. Officer Petrarca I salute you brother. Get well soon.
