Bradenburg, KY – An Oldham County teacher has been arrested for having drunken sex with a 15-year-old former student, according to prosecutors.
Amy Hamilton, 40, worked at Stuart Pepper Middle School where she met the victim she had sexual contact with, according to Otto Schalk, the prosecuting attorney for Harrison County, Indiana.
People magazine reported that the Kentucky teacher gave alcohol to the boy before having sex with him.
Hamilton first met the student in 2017 when she worked at the middle school. Hamilton didn’t have sex with the student while she was his teacher, but kept in contact with him via text messages after she took a new teaching job.
The 15-year-old boy was no longer her student in March of 2018 when Hamilton allegedly had sex with him in her home in Harrison County, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.
Police said Hamilton gave the boy about nine beers while she drank many bottles of wine before the sexual abuse took place, according to WKYT. Court documents said the student made sexual advances earlier in the day but Hamilton resisted. She later led him to her bedroom where to have sex.
Hamilton now works at South Oldham High School.
Police received a tip in January about “inappropriate behavior” and began investigating, according to Schalk. Police got a search warrant on a cellphone that showed messages that alluded to an intimate relationship between Hamilton and the student.
Hamilton turned herself in to police on Monday. She was charged with felony sexual misconduct with a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She was released from the Harrison County jail on a $5,000 bond.
Oldham County Schools Spokeswoman Lori McDowell said Hamilton was not at her job at the high school on Monday.
"This information is new to us, but we will take the appropriate actions to ensure the safety of our students," McDowell said, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.
