Police Find Kidnapped 3-Year-Old's Body At Landfill

Police recovered Kamille "Cupcake" McKinney's body on Tuesday.

Birmingham, AL – Police have recovered the body of a kidnapped three-year-old girl after sifting through 12 tons of trash inside a Jefferson County landfill.

Kamille “Cupcake” McKinney was taken from the front yard of a home in Tom Brown Village at about 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 12 during an outdoor birthday party, WBRC reported.

Security footage showed Kamille and another child playing outside, when a man with a slight limp suddenly walked up to them, The Washington Post reported.

He paused by the children briefly, then continued on his way with the children running behind him until they were all out of the camera’s view.

Just moments later, Kamille disappeared.

The family did not immediately call the police, but instead, searched the neighborhood themselves first for the missing toddler, WBRC reported.

“As many families think that they can resolve their issue on their own, they think that they can do just a quick search of the neighborhood or area to find a missing person or missing child,” Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith told reporters. “There was a little bit of a delay in getting the information to law enforcement so we can conduct a thorough grid search of the entire area before putting out an AMBER Alert.”

The AMBER Alert for Kamille was issued at 12:06 a.m. on Sunday morning, almost four hours after the little girl was grabbed from the birthday party, according to WBRC.

Other children at the party said that a man put the toddler into an SUV. Police later determined that the suspect vehicle was a dark-colored Toyota Sequoia, according to The Washington Post.

Nearly 24 hours into the widespread search for Kamille, neighbors spotted the vehicle outside a condominium near the area where the toddler had been taken from.

Police said that the tip – combined with additional evidence gathered during the search – led them to two suspects at the condominium, The Washington Post reported.

The duo, 29-year-old Derick Irisha Brown and her boyfriend, 39-year-old Patrick Devone Stallworth, were initially arrested on unrelated charges.

While searching Stallworth’s phone in connection with Kamille’s abduction, investigators allegedly discovered images that ultimately resulted in him being charged with three counts of possession with intent to disseminate obscene material, and four counts of possession of obscene material of persons under 17 years of age, WBRC reported.

Kamille was not in any of those images, according to The Birmingham News.

Stallworth later bonded out of jail, but has since been arrested on additional charges, police said.

Brown, who was on probation at the time, was initially arrested in connection with another kidnapping, WBRC reported.

The 10-day search for Kamille ended on Tuesday, when investigators found the toddler’s body inside a dumpster that had previously been parked near the condominium where Brown and Stallworth were arrested, The Washington Post reported.

The discovery was made after the dumpster had already been taken to the Jefferson County landfill.

“We believe that this was something that they thought about and acted upon,” Chief Smith said, according to The Washington Post. “They saw an opportunity to take a young child, which they did. Further investigation will reveal what action happened after that.”

Chief Smith said that the suspects had no connection with Kamille or her family prior to the abduction, WBRC reported.

"Our investigators, along with the FBI, have worked tirelessly, 24 hours a day, to locate this young child and bring her back home and to hold those accountable who were involved in her disappearance…and ultimately her demise,'' Chief Smith said, according to The Birmingham News.

Brown and Stallworth are expected to be charged with murder and kidnapping.

“Locating the remains were the last pieces of the puzzle that we needed to bring the capital murder charges and the kidnapping charges, which we will seek tomorrow,” Chief Smith said, according to WIAT.

“Our entire city is mourning,” Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said at the news conference on Tuesday, according to WBRC. “Kamille is gone, ripped away from her family. The pain her family is enduring is unimaginable.”

“The perpetrator of this crime will be brought to justice and be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the mayor continued. “So tonight, Birmingham, we mourn as one. Please uplift this family. Uplift your own families. Hold your loved ones tighter."

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey extended her condolences to Kamille’s family in a statement following the press conference.

“Given the tragic news that is breaking this evening, I offer my heartfelt condolences to Kamille’s family. I offer profound thanks to law enforcement and to all the volunteers who have worked tirelessly in search of this precious little girl,” Ivey said, according to WBRC. “The heart of our state is broken… Our prayers remain with Kamille’s family and all who have been touched by this nightmare.”

if guilty, they need to be dealt with swiftly and harshly. Meaning, a scary death should be in their very immediate future.

This is so sad and so UNNECESSARY~ That baby should have been INSIDE her home, IN BED, ASLEEP, and her shitty parents should have been INSIDE not "PARTYING" at 8:30 pm. NOT ONE ADULT WAS AROUND when the MF walked up to those babies. NOT ONE ADULT saw what happened. WHY? Because they were DRINKING AND SMOKIN' WEED! Poor little baby.

In the event of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, I believe hanging would be most appropriate. The same death as Judas, for a betrayal of innocence.

Please, for the love of all that is good and right, put them in with the general population and announce loudly why they are there. That would give her family justice.

I followed this story closely and when I heard how that adorable child was tossed away it ripped my heart out. I am not big on death penalty cases but this one is a drop in the bucket. RIH Cupcake, you will never be forgotten and your sweet life mattered. 🙏🏼💔😢

My prayers go out to the family during this terrible time.

Curious how quiet all the anti-cop trolls are for a story like this. Just proves their intent is to spew their hate towards law enforcement but having nothing to say when a little girl is murdered by pedophiles. However, I'm sure if the suspects were white, lowest would be the first to comment.

No photos of these two murderers? We all know the answer why. Keep protecting the endangered 'thugs' at all costs. Sickening POC's
