The incident happened when Chief Leggett attempted to arrest Zackery Deville, 24, for criminal trespassing.
Deville pulled a knife and stabbed the chief in the face and neck. He then fled the area.
Chief Leggett was airlifted to Rapides Medical Center where he remains in the intensive care unit.
Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office announced on Wednesday that they have arrested Deville, and he is being charged with attempted first degree murder and criminal trespassing.
Turkey Creek Mayor Heather Cloud issued a statement which said that drug activity appears to be involved.
The mayor said in a statement, "The Village of Turkey Creek is grateful to God for preserving our Chief's life and we ask for continued prayers for our Chief, his family and our Village."
Our thoughts and prayers are with the wounded police chief.
