Philadelphia Mayor Calls President Trump's Comments An Insult To Police

Philadelphia, PA - Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney had some strong words for President Trump for what the mayor is calling an insult to police.

Philadelphia, PA - Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney had some strong words for President Trump for what the mayor is calling an insult to police.

David Caplan with ABC News reports that President Trump attended a GOP policy retreat on Thursday where he said, "Here in Philadelphia, the murder rate has been steady -- I mean just terribly increasing. And then you look at Chicago, what's going on in Chicago? I said the other day, what the hell is going on?"

Mayor Jim Kenney's response didn't mince words in a statement he released, "President Trump's false statements today were an insult to the men and women of the Philadelphia police force -- the very same men and women who are working long hours today to ensure his safety."

The Mayor defended the crime rate in the city saying, "Our police officers have worked tirelessly and with great personal sacrifice to get Philadelphia's crime rate down to its lowest point in forty years, while also successfully implementing reforms to strengthen police-community relations and uphold the rights of all our residents."

Taking the offensive Mayor Jim Kenney blamed President Trump and republican policies for their inability to do more, "Our homicides are, in fact, slowly declining, and while we are not satisfied with even our current numbers, we are handicapped by Republican refusal to enact any kind of common sense gun control and by their obsession with turning our police officers into ICE agents –- which will prevent immigrants from coming forward to report crimes or provide critical witnesses statements that can put dangerous criminals behind bars."

The last ten years had seen a steady decline in homicides through 2014. In 2015 the homicides spiked up from 248 in 2014 to 280 in 2015. There was barely any change in 2016 at 277 homicides. Now in 2017 the city is already at 27 homicides, a 37% increase from the year before.
