Washington, DC – President Donald Trump called out the Reverent Al Sharpton for being a “con man” and a “troublemaker” after the controversial activist announced he was on his way to Baltimore to participate in a press conference addressing the President’s remarks about the rat-infested city.
On Saturday, President Trump challenged House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Maryland) for having made untrue claims about conditions of the detention centers at the U.S. border after the congressman, who hasn’t actually visited the southern border recently, described illegal immigrant children sitting in their own feces to reporters, FOX News reported.
The President called Cummings’ Baltimore district a rat-infested mess that was in worse shape than the situation at the southern border.
Cummings fought back, claiming that he goes home to his district every night, and called the President a racist for having so categorized his constituents as vermin, FOX News reported.
President Trump and numerous media outlets responded with statistics that showed Baltimore does, in fact, have one of the worst rat infestation problems in the United States.
The city also has a growing problem with violent crime.
Also unearthed were comments from numerous Democratic luminaries, including Presidential hopeful U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (D-Vermont), who talked about what a dangerous disaster Baltimore had become and likened it to a third-world country.
Critics of President Trump, however, continued to take issue with his characterization of the blighted city and reiterated that his remarks were racist.
President Trump fired back.
“There is nothing racist in stating plainly what most people already know, that Elijah Cummings has done a terrible job for the people of his district, and of Baltimore itself. Dems always play the race card when they are unable to win with facts. Shame!” President Trump tweeted on Sunday afternoon.
Sharpton flew to Washington on Sunday to join up with Cummings in support of his district.
“Arrived in DC from Atlanta, headed to Baltimore. Long day but can’t stop,” Sharpton tweeted along with a pic of himself on the airport escalator after he arrived.
Sharpton is known for showing up at every racially-charged media opportunity and President Trump didn’t hesitate to call him out on it.
“I have known Al for 25 years,” President Trump tweeted above the photo of Sharpton on Monday morning. “Went to fights with him & Don King, always got along well. He ‘loved Trump!’ He would ask me for favors often. Al is a con man, a troublemaker, always looking for a score. Just doing his thing. Must have intimidated Comcast/NBC. Hates Whites & Cops!”
“Trump says I’m a troublemaker & con man. I do make trouble for bigots. If he really thought I was a con man he would want me in his cabinet,” Sharpton replied via snarky tweet.
President Trump didn’t cow to the accusation of bigotry.
“Baltimore, under the leadership of Elijah Cummings, has the worst Crime Statistics in the Nation. 25 years of all talk, no action! So tired of listening to the same old Bull...Next, Reverend Al will show up to complain & protest. Nothing will get done for the people in need. Sad!” the President tweeted.
“If racist Elijah Cummings would focus more of his energy on helping the good people of his district, and Baltimore itself, perhaps progress could be made in fixing the mess that he has helped to create over many years of incompetent leadership. His radical ‘oversight’ is a joke!” he tweeted a little bit later.
At the press conference on Monday morning, Sharpton likened President Trump to a child and said he has “a particular venom for blacks and people of color.”
