DeWitt, NY - One Onondaga County Deputy was transported to a hospital Monday night after two suspects opened fire on him as he sat in his car near the LeMoyne campus.
According to CNY Central, the incident occurred on Canton Drive, where the Onondaga County Deputy was working on an investigation in an unmarked vehicle. A large manhunt is underway for two males after the Deputy called out at about 6:28 PM, stating that his vehicle had been shot at approximately 10 times. The two suspects were described as black males, one wearing a black shirt, last seen running behind Building #24 on Caton Drive, according to the Syracuse web site.
Onondaga County sheriff's deputies, members of a SWAT team and DeWitt police officers have responded to the scene. Reports have been received that Officers are clearing buildings in the area. Springfield and Thompson roads, as well as Mountainview Avenue and Springfield Road are closed at this time. Residents of the apartment complex and the area have been asked to shelter in place. LeMoyne College has sent out a campus alert about the incident, the road closures, and asking students to avoid the area.
The Deputy was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries; he was not struck by any of the bullets. The ambulance was escorted by two Officers to a hospital in Syracuse. No one else was believed to have injured. The Springfield Apartment Complex is very familiar to law enforcement and has been the scene of multiple assaults and several homicides in the past.
