One Firefighter Murdered, Another Wounded By Gunfire At Retirement Home Blaze

Long Beach Fire Captain Dave Rosa was fatally shot, and second firefighter was wounded, during a high-rise fire Monday.

Long Beach, CA – A 17-year veteran of the Long Beach Fire Department was murdered in the line of duty early Monday morning, while responding to a fire at a high-rise retirement home.

Long Beach Fire Captain Dave Rosa was fatally shot minutes after dousing a blaze that was believed to have resulted from an explosion in the building.

"It hits home. We just show up to do our job," Long Beach Police Sergeant Brad Johnson told KNBC. "Firefighters, they deal with fire. They don't deal with bullets. It's a sad day in Long Beach's history."

The incident began when firefighters were called to The Covenant House, a senior and disabled-living facility located in the 600-block of East 4th Street, at about 3:50 a.m. on June 25 for a report of an explosion followed by a fire, KTLA reported.

Residents reported that they had heard an explosion and then afterward, smelled gas.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and found windows had been blown out of one unit in the building, and the sprinkler system had been activated, Long Beach Fire Chief Mike Duree said during a press conference after the incident.

Aerial footage of the scene showed a fire engine’s ladder extended to the balcony of one of the units in the high rise.

Chief Duree said firefighters reported having knocked down the initial fire, and then minutes later, they reported shots fired.

Two firefighters and a civilian were shot, KTLA reported.

Captain Rosa, 45, was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center in critical condition, where he later died, Chief Duree said. He had been the captain at Fire Station 10 for six-and-a-half years.

The other firefighter, a 35-year-old, 10-year veteran of the fire department whose name has not yet been released, was also transported to the hospital where he remained in stable condition, according to KTLA. No information has been released about the condition of the civilian who had been wounded.

Long Beach Police Chief Robert Luna said at the press conference that authorities do not yet know what led up to the explosion, fire, and eventual shooting.

"You go to these scenes and you never know what's on the other side of those doors," Chief Luna said. "These brave firefighters went through those doors and unfortunately they were met with gunfire."

Police have detained a person of interest in the shooting, and Chief Luna said that officers recovered a weapon at the scene, KTLA reported.

The bomb squad was still searching the apartment late on Monday morning, KNBC reported.

Chief Luna said investigators were working together to put together a “big puzzle” from “a very chaotic scene,” according to KTLA.

Captain Rosa is survived by his wife and two children, KTLA reported.

@Hi_estComnDenomn - I don't expect to hear from you. Your MO is not to respond when proven wrong with actual facts. Coward!

@LEO0301 I know you only answer succintly when you're not backed into a corner. Now that you realize as well, you shouldn't have much issue answering future questions.

You've seen lie detector tests before, right? Consider that the control.

@Hi_estComnDenomn - what in the bloody hell are you even talking about, Felon? Please, don't forget that appointment you have with the mental health counselor.

@LEO0301 and yes, i do feel stupid. I should have realized way before now exactly how you conduct arguments.

@Hi_estComnDenomn - Remember that old saying "don't go away mad....just go away"? I think that applies now. Bye, bye!

@LEO0301 Im talking about how the article mentioned firemen in the last paragraph. If you're going to get the most out of an article without reading the whole thing, you read the first and last paragraph. That's a gimme.

Now, when i ask you questions to which you feel backed into a corner, you start strawmanning and conflating and laughing to distract from the question. I thought you were just dumb.

But now that i realize you can readily answer succinctly when you're not backed down, it shouldn't be hard to answer my questions succinctly in the future.

@Hi_estComnDenomn - you really don't know when to quit, do you? You see I actually read the entire article, instead of just skimming it like you apparently did. Reading comprehension is important, Felon.

@LEO0301 You do realize that skimming the article wasnt the point at all, right? Look, forget everything else i said. Here is my bottom line.

You have the ability to answer questions succintly, so when you don't, you're just playing dumb

@Hi_estComnDenomn - the point to this particular subject is the absolute fact you failed to read the article above before making a stupid comment. There, I hope that is perfectly clear.

@LEO0301 "absolute fact." There you go being loose with words again.

You can answer succinctly, and you choose not to when it suits you.

@Hi_estComnDenomn Can I ask, why do you come on a pro-police site to make a fool out of yourself? Every time you come on here to spout a bunch of anti-cop none sense or feebly attempt to outsmart people (Like you just tried now) you always get shut down by facts and logic. Then, hilariously, you double down and start rambling on through a word salad that makes no sense to anyone (again, like you just did here). I think you need a new site to troll where no one knows you; everyone here realizes what a fuckwit you really are.

@TeneteLineam This is a free site and i can come and go as i please. If you don't like it, hire me to create a pro-police website with a paywall. We can have it up for you in a couple of months.

And i must not be making myself clear when i say i don't care what you think about me. You're words on a screen. I suggest you stop being so sensitive and log off if chat threads bother you.

I wonder whether stricter federal gun control could have prevented this tragedy.

@Hi_estComnDenomn You clearly do care what people on this forum think, otherwise you wouldn’t be on here constantly provoking reactions. Again, I don’t know why you do it, you’re not exactly changing peoples’ minds to see your viewpoint, a viewpoint that I pointed out yesterday to you that comes from a place of ignorance. Even when proven wrong, like you were on this article, you can’t be humble and back down. You’re the very embodiment of a troll. The internet could certainly use fewer of those.

2 theories here.

  1. Retirement home with senior gun owner who panicked when fd took his or her door.
  2. Bomb maker.

@LordSeamus I think one certain person here falls into several of these categories, he's a multi-tasking troll.

02 of 10 The Persistent Debate Troll This type of troll loves a good argument. They can take a great, thoroughly researched and fact-based piece of content, and come at it from all opposing discussion angles to challenge its message. They believe they're right, and everyone else is wrong. You'll often also find them leaving long threads or arguments with other commenters in community comment sections, and they're always determined to have the last word – continuing to comment until that other user gives up.

03 of 10 The Grammar and Spellcheck Troll You know this type of troll. They're the people who always have to tell other users that they have misspelled words and grammar mistakes. Even when they do it by simply commenting with the corrected word behind an asterisk symbol, it's pretty much never a welcomed comment to any discussion. Some of them even use a commenter's spelling and grammar mistakes as an excuse to insult them.

05 of 10 The Show-Off, Know-it-All Or Blabbermouth Troll A close relative to the persistent debate troll, the show-off or blabbermouth troll is a person who doesn't necessarily like to participate in arguments but does love to share his opinion in extreme detail, even spreading rumors and secrets in some cases. Think of that one family member or friend you know who just loves to hear his own voice. That's the Internet equivalent of the show-off or know-it-all or blabbermouth troll. They love to have long discussions and write lots of paragraphs about whatever they know, whether anyone reads it or not.

07 of 10 The One Word Only Troll There's always that one contributor to a Facebook status update, a forum thread, and Instagram photo, a Tumblr post or any other form of social posting who just says "lol" or "what" or "k" or "yes" or "no." They're certainly far from the worst type of troll you meet online, but when a serious or detailed topic is being discussed, their one-word replies are just a nuisance to all who are trying add value and follow the discussion.

08 of 10 The Exaggeration Troll Exaggeration trolls can sometimes be a combination of know-it-alls, the offended and even debate trolls. They know how to take any topic or problem and completely blow it out of proportion. Some of them actually try to do it to be funny, and sometimes they succeed, while others do it just to be annoying. They rarely ever contribute any real value to a discussion and often bring up problems and issues that may arguably be unrelated to what's being discussed.

09 of 10 The Off Topic Troll It's pretty hard not to hate that guy who posts something completely off topic in any type of social community discussion. It can be even worse when that person succeeds in shifting the topic and everyone ends up talking about whatever irrelevant thing that he posted. You see it all the time online – in the comments of Facebook posts, in threaded YouTube comments, on Twitter and literally anywhere there're active discussions happening.

@realDonaldTrump yup that would be same person I'm thinking of. And I would love to see a block user button here, to help control all the trolls and bots. It would make the admins job easier and our lives as well ! Sorry to get off topic, but I will state that my godfather was a firefighter in Boston till the day he died , on the job.

@LordSeamus Yes agreed. Anytime someone has the nerve to make light of heroes being killed in the line of duty while defending criminals... that asshole needs to be banned or blocked. We're up to 28 likes at the moment, keep em coming boys! Officer Blue has the link sent to him already.

agreed, trolls are mosquitoes in the patio of life. Life allows me flyswatters... I'd like a "ignore" button.
