North Las Vegas, NV - A North Las Vegas detective was critically injured in a crash on Friday afternoon. This hero detective tragically died Saturday morning.
According to Fox5Vegas, the incident occurred Friday afternoon about 2:00 PM on Martin Luther King Boulevard and Carey Avenue. Officer Aaron Patty of the North Las Vegas Police Department said that the NLVPD detective was traveling northbound when his vehicle was struck head-on by a vehicle traveling southbound in the wrong direction. The detective had to be cut out of his vehicle before he could be transported to the hospital. Police believe the female driver of the southbound vehicle was responsible for the crash.
The NLVPD detective was transported to University Medical Center where he underwent surgery. He remained in critical condition fighting for his life until he died early this morning. Law enforcement officers from the area stood vigil outside the hospital overnight. The driver of the other vehicle was also injured and is hospitalized in stable condition. The intersection was closed for more than six hours during the police investigation.
According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a third vehicle, which was traveling behind the detective's vehicle, was also involved in the crash. The male driver of that vehicle received minor injuries. The reason for the woman driver traveling the wrong direction is not known at this time.
The North Las Vegas Police Department announced the detective's death on Twitter, about 3:30 AM, stating "It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our detective.
