Lorain, Ohio - Officer David Fahey was killed Tuesday morning, and now the man who killed the hero is in custody.
Cleveland Police Officer David Fahey was helping out on the scene of a collision involving a fire truck and a van at about 5:40 AM Tuesday morning, on I-90 wesbound just west of Warren Rd. While Officer Fahey was setting up flares, a car barreled through and struck the hero, killing him. Despite the obvious impact and significant damage to the suspect’s vehicle, they kept driving.
A massive manhunt was launched for the driver of the white Toyota Camry that struck Officer David Fahey. A couple of hours later, we received reports of officers converging on a residence in Lorain.
The honor guard and Officer Fahey's academy classmates arrived at the location with Officer David Fahey's handcuffs, and took Israel Alvarez, 44, into custody for Aggravated Vehicular Homicide and Felony Hit Skip. Investigators will consult with the Prosecutor’s Office regarding charges.
Officer David Fahey comes from a family of law enforcement; both of Officer Fahey’s parents were Cleveland Police Officers as well. Officer Fahey was 39-years-old, a Navy Veteran, and was hired July 7th, 2014. He was assigned to the first district.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Fahey’s family and the Cleveland Police Department.
