Off-Duty Female Deputy Shoots Ax-Wielding Home Intruder

An off-duty Orange County sheriff’s deputy shot an ax-wielding burglary suspect as he was breaking into her home.

Apopka, FL – An off-duty Orange County sheriff’s deputy shot an ax-wielding burglary suspect as he was breaking into her home on Tuesday night.

Orange County deputies began responding to the Rolling Oaks subdivision at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 after they received reports of a man who broke into one residence and attempted to make entry into several more, WFTV reported.

An Orange County deputy living in the neighborhood was at home with her children, unaware of the incidents occurring in the area, when the intruder targeted her home.

“He literally took an ax and broke through the back door,” Orange County Sheriff John Mina told reporters during a press conference later that night.

As the suspect made his way into the house, the deputy opened fire, shooting him repeatedly in the lower extremities, WKMG reported.

She wrestled him into handcuffs during the struggle that ensued and then began delivering life-saving aid until on-duty deputies and medical personnel arrived at the scene, according to WFTV.

The suspect is expected to survive his wounds and will be charged with armed burglary once he is released from the hospital, Sheriff Mina told WFTV.

“I think [the deputy] did a great job,” the sheriff said. “She protected herself and her kids, who were at home with her. Just like any normal person, I think she’s shaken up by this.”

The deputy involved in the incident is a two-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, WFTV reported.

“Our deputies are trained to protect themselves, protect our communities, and this person broke into a deputy’s home with an ax, and who knows what his intentions were,” Sheriff Mina said. “Anyone like this is going to be met with lethal force by our deputies, and I think she did a great job.”

The deputy’s neighbors said they are glad she and her children are safe and that she was able to stop the suspect before he victimized anyone else.

“My wife and kids are safe, and I’m glad the deputy’s safe and that her kids are safe, because that’s what really matters,” area resident Mike Largent told WFTV.

Why did she not shoot to kill? Now taxpayers will be on the hook for his medical bills and attorney's fees and for the cost of his hopefully lengthy incarceration.

She did a great job and I hope her kids are not traumatized by this. Also maybe she was peeking over her sights at the bad guy thus making her shoot low.

Another scumbag waste of oxygen that should of been made swiss cheese and euthanized!! Now tax payers are going to be paying his medical bills, attorneys fees, court costs and incarceration fees. Cheaper just to kill the vermin!!

Glad that gun control law prevented this criminal from having a gun. If the criminal had had a gun then the deputy probably would have been ventilated, perhaps along with her other family members. Nobody wants to see that.

You have knowledge that this criminal attempted to legally purchase a gift and was denied because of him control laws?
... Or is this just an agenda statement?
... And yes I'm glad the criminal choose an axe as his deadly weapon.

I guess its a good thing that no one can buy an illegal gun in Florida. Go back to TV Basement Bunny.

I hope you re-start your meds...your delusions are coming through. Since when do the gun laws stop a criminal from having a gun?

When will you be starting the much needed "ax control laws" ? Maybe this idiot didn't like guns and his preference was to try and get "up close and personal". You know that more gun laws will not stop a criminal if he wants to get a gun.

As a trainer of police use of force.. I can say this deputy needs retraining and should not be praised for poor use of "deadly force". Shooting into lower extremities indicates either poor marksmanship or panic shooting. Either way... not to be be praised for a good job. I wouldn't want her for my partner.
