Off-Duty Cop Leaves His Kids In A Hot Car, Then A Real Cop Shows Up To Save Them

Daniel Goffreda was shopping for about 25 minutes while he left his two young sons in the car in 84 degree temperatures

Cross Lanes, WV A Charleston Police Department officer was charged with a felony after he left his young children in a hot car Sunday while he shopped.

Charleston Police Corporal Daniel Goffreda, 32, drove his two-year-old son and five-year-old son to the grocery store in Cross Lanes.

Corporal Goffreda parked in the rear of the parking lot at a Kroger store, according to the West Virginia MetroNews.

He then left his children in the car as he went in to shop, according to WSAZ-TV.

The children were in the car for about 25 minutes before being discovered by deputies.

When the deputies arrived, the temperature was about 84 degrees outside with 67 percent humidity, according to WSAZ.

The deputy who responded said both children were sweating profusely and both were strapped into their child seats. The deputy shouted to the five-year-old boy to open the car door, but the boy mouthed, I dont know how to, according to WSAZ.

Paramedics from the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority arrived and the deputy broke one of the car windows. The paramedics removed the children and put them in the ambulance.

One of the children had wet clothing from sweating, according to WSAZ.

Cpl. Goffreda is charged with two counts of child neglect creating risk of injury, according to WVAH-TV.

The Charleston Police Department said that Cpl. Goffreda is on paid leave pending an internal investigation.

The Kanawha County Sheriff's Department is investigating, according to WSAZ.

Do you think that the officer should be immediately fired if he inadvertently forgot his children? We'd like to hear from you. Please let us know in the comments.

I am a retired Law Enforcement Officer and there is no excuse for leaving the kids in the car period. I dont care if it was 60 degrees and it was for a minute. If you get out of the car and walk away from the car you carry your kids with you!! He should fired because what will happen if he is patrolling and he get a call about kids being left in a car. How can he arrest somebody else for it when he does it himself. Im sorry but he needs to be terminated from Law Enforcement, period!!!

Who wrote the title? An off duty cop is a REAL cop!! You idiot! The off duty cop should be treated just like you or I if we left our young kids unattended in a hot car! I believe we would have been arrested. How is this cop going to react if he is the on duty officer sent to save someone elses kids? Is he going to say thats ok I do it all the time? Lets forget the I forgot they were in the car routine! Why did he park in the back of the store or where he did so no one would notice. This guy knew exactly what he was doing.

Not just the hot car, a 2 and a 5 year old alone for 25 minutes, what a dumb ass. A cop knows better than that. I know, its a pain in the ass to have to bring kids in and out of stores. But a hot parked car? If you're gonna be careless to leave 2 small children all alone in a car, at least leave the car running with the AC on, doors locked and parking brake set. And have an extra key on hand. Still has the danger of a kidnapper or any other dangers, kids put the car in gear, etc.

...if he inadvertently forgot his children? Just feckn stop it. Inadvertently my ass. You load your kids into the car, drive to the grocery store, then forget they are there? Even if by some serious stretch of the imagination someone could forget the kids they just loaded into the car, thats still proof that they shouldnt have those kids.

I think he should be fired and charged. How many times do people have to get it in their minds that this can kill children and/or animals? he's a cop, how many times has he been on a call similar to this. i don't believe he forgot the babies, he just wanted to shop without having to deal with a 2yr old and a 5yr old.
