NFL Shoots Down Suspended Player's Claim That Racial Slur Instigated Brawl

The NFL said it found 'no such evidence' to support a suspended player's claim that a slur instigated a brawl

Cleveland, OH – The National Football League said it “found no such evidence” to support the claim that Pittsburgh Steeler quarterback Mason Rudolph used a racial slur while talking to Cleveland Brown Myles Garrett right before a fight on national TV broke out between the two teams.

Garrett was suspended for the rest of the season after he grabbed Rudolph’s helmet and hit him in the head with it.

Garrett’s suspension is listed as indefinite by the NFL as he must meet with the league office before being reinstated.

ESPN reported that Garrett made the allegation of the racial slur during an appeal hearing before the NFL.

Garrett said Thursday he was disappointed the claim he made was leaked to the media but he stood by it, ESPN reported.

"I was assured that the hearing was space that afforded the opportunity to speak openly and honestly about the incident that led to my suspension," Garrett said, according to ESPN. "This was not meant for public dissemination, nor was it a convenient attempt to justify my actions or restore my image in the eyes of those I disappointed. I know what I heard. Whether my opponent's comment was born out of frustration or ignorance, I cannot say. But his actions do not excuse my lack of restraint in the moment, and I truly regret the impact this has had on the league, the Browns and our devoted fans."

The Pittsburgh Steelers released a statement on behalf of Rudolph denying that he used a slur.

“Mason vehemently denies the report of being accused of using a racial slur during the incident Thursday night in Cleveland," Steelers spokesman Burt Lauten said in a statement, according to ESPN. “He will not discuss this accusation any further and his focus remains on preparation for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals.”

Rudolph’s attorney said that Garrett was lying about the use of a slur.

Attorney Timothy M. Younger, said: "According to ESPN, in his appeal, Myles Garrett falsely asserted that Mason Rudolph uttered a racial slur toward him, prior to swinging a helmet at Mason's uncovered head, in a desperate attempt to mitigate his suspension. This is a lie. This false allegation was never asserted by Garrett in the aftermath of the game, never suggested prior to the hearing, and conspicuously absent in the apology published by the Browns and adopted by Garrett."

Younger continued, according to ESPN: "The malicious use of this wild and unfounded allegation is an assault on Mason's integrity which is far worse than the physical assault witnessed on Thursday. This is reckless and shameful. We will have no further comment."

And of course the race card is pulled! And if he is such a”big man”, he loses his temper and assaults someone because he was called a name or made fun of. Such a mature adult... thug!

The race card............ Never leave home without it. 🙄

Garrett's a thug and that was a lameass excuse to try to blame the victim. He's a professional athlete, supposedly mature enough to play the game, and he acted like a four-year-old having a tantrum. He's a prime example of why people don't like the NFL.

Heck wasn't he one of those who took a knee because of his butt hurt feelings of hate and crime against blacks by America. Seem he does not want to live the example. If this was a true account he would have brought it out at the very beginning and the whole team would be yelling about it. He is pulling this simply because his legal team is trying to get his butt out of hot water after the fact.

So using his defense, any time a white person is called a "Cracker," they can beat the shit out of the person doing the name calling? Pathetic excuse!

Considering 90% of the NFL is black and there are plenty of balck players on the Pittsburgh team, why would the Pitts QB use a racial slur?? He hit the QB late and the QB was trying to get him off.

Irrelevant anyway. A verbal assault should not be reciprocated with a physical one.

The correct response is to respond verbally, ignore it, or go crying to your momma about it.

Talking about a low life , pretty soon the race card will be obsolete like slavery and deserving everything. You earn a spot in society like everyone else has to

Not justifying what he did by ant means, but Mason tried to rip his helmet off him first, then get trying to go after Garrett after her got up and was supdued by other players from attacking Garrett. If you ask me the NFL is trying to get it's fans back by milking this incident for all it's worth. Mason should also sit in the bench for the remainder of the season

Could be true but someone else said it and he thought it was the QB.

Did the NFL say the slur was never said, or that there was not evidence that it was said? not that it justifies Garrett's actions (he should have been banned from the NFL for what he did), but there is a difference between the two.

There was one player this season who called someone a racist name and thst was Antonio Brown calling the Raiders GM a "cracker" to his face. Nothing happened there. So now this idiot is trying to use that in the very last second to try to excuse his actions, something that no one anywhere near them hard. Just pathetic attempt at playing the race card.

The Race Card is way overdrawn. But it still works because so many cowardly whites grovel before it.

Myles Garrett is a liar and his “excuse” seems to have run its course and no one is buying it.

I played sports in the 70s and I would not have ever considered using the “N” word towards another athlete, school mate, co-worker, or friend. And today, other than television, I never hear the word.

Years ago, you rarely heard the “N” word on television. You hear the “N” hundreds of times a day on BET. If you want everyone else to take you seriously, clean up your own house first.

Even if someone used a racial slur towards him, is he so emotionally immature that he would behavior in such a way?
