New Orleans Saints Kneel During Tribute For Murdered Officer

New Orleans Saints kneel during tribute to murdered hero, Officer Marcus McNeil. (Kneeling photo from prior game in London)

New Orleans, LA – New Orleans Saints players kneeled before the game on Sunday, but it wasn’t during the national anthem, it was during a tribute to murdered New Orleans PD Officer Marcus McNeil.

Fans booed as players knelt during the moment of silence for Officer McNeil.

The players then stood for the national anthem, according to NOLA.com .

NOTE: The kneeling photo used is from a prior game. For a photo from today, see NOLA.com.

Sunday’s game of Saints vs. Lions was the first game at the Superdome since President Trump said that kneelers should be fired.

None of the Lions players kneeled.

New Orleans Police Department Officer Marcus McNeil, 29, was ambushed and murdered early Friday morning.

The incident happened just after midnight when a group of three officers on patrol spotted something suspicious.

Officer McNeil stepped out of his car to investigate and a gunman opened fire, shooting the officer repeatedly.

Other officers returned fire, shooting the suspect, who then ran into an apartment.

The gunman remained barricaded in the apartment until he eventually surrendered to a SWAT team.

Officer McNeil was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officer Marcus McNeil leaves behind his wife, Brittiny, and two small children.

Brittiny told New Orleans Magazine that Officer McNeil had always wanted to join New Orleans PD because he wanted to make a difference in the city which is plagued with crime and poverty.

Officer McNeil's killer was identified as Darren Bridges. His motive is not known at this time.

It's not clear at this time if the Saints players intended to kneel during the tribute to Officer McNeil, of it they were just too dense to realize when they were kneeling.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family of Officer McNeil.

I was there and there was no doubt why they were taking a knee.. The Saints organization should be ashamed of themseves to allow this to happen. The moment of silence was never held because the fans were booing so loud most never heard the speaker calling for it.

I don't see the issue here. Kneeling is a recognition of respect for the fallen, and has been for ages.

@Tjbrooks While Kaepernick's issues were primarily with police, Kaepernick said, "I won't stand to show pride in a flag..." so when people say it was never about the flag, well, that's not what Kaepernick said.

Screw the NFL, and Japershithed, and the bull crap he stood or sat for. Total disrespect for everything. I’m not sure how the people that break the law wonder why the cops are doing there job. When you break the law, police come and thank god for that. If cops are bothering you, STAY OUT OF TROUBLE AND PLACES WERE TROUBLE HAPPEN. Get smart instead of blaming everyone else except yourself. Flat out pathetic but not surprised.

Simple solution, leave the communities where the majority of the crime originates from to their own devices and let the NFL deal with it.

Time for the police to provide no off-duty services to the NFL. Let them find their own protection. Why should police use their off-duty time for these ungrateful, lying millionaires. Yes, lying. Check the statistics....the blacks killed were not "innocents" who were targeted, singled out or shot simply because of their color. They were committing crimes, assaulting the officer or violently resisting arrest. Also, more whites are shot than blacks. All this boo hooing and protesting is based on false narratives...such as "hands up, don't shoot" perpetrated by the press and fueled by BLM and racists. Yes, there are some bad shootings due to an occasional bad cop or a mistake in judgment (you try doing their job and see how you'd react when you have less than 2 seconds to determine if it will be your life or the other persons...see how perfect you'd be). And those bad shootings aren't just blacks...no matter what the press and BLM would like you to believe. It is just that only the black deaths make the news.

I'm having trouble finding the truth about this. My friends at the game said it didn't appear they were kneeling during the moment of silence, but some reports say "some" players knelt. It would be absolutely appalling if this is true. However, why do you have a picture of kneeling Saints in different uniforms than they were wearing today?

I TELL YOU WHAT. WITH ALL THE MANNING OF THEIR KNEES THESE FOOTBALL PLAYERS DO NOW IN THE NFL. I AM BEGINNING TO BELIEVE THAT THESE ARE NOT REAL MEN OUT ON THE FOOTBALL FIELDS ANYMORE. SEEMS LIKE THEY LIKE BEING ON THEIR KNEES TO MUCH FOR MY LIKING NOW DAYS RATHER THEN BEING MEN.

talbotkimberly
talbotkimberly

First of all the kneeling picture was taken from a previous game!!! They have been standing like Real men do supporting the National Anthem and them people who died for us to be free and the people serving to still keep us free. But maybe the were kneeling in prayer because why wouldn't they pray for this fallen officer. The booing was disrespectful if they couldn't hear what was being announced. Believe me I didn't watch the game because I want to see them stand for the Anthem, not some announcer just tell me they did. I really think in my heart they were kneeling for this fallen hero! If not well just another sad day in this world!

This fallen officer was black but so what, we all are children of God and bleed red!!!! Prayers for this family.

Also, its in our High Schools already!!!! Its sad but these players need to just stay in the locker room until its time to play and then they wouldn't be called out! I'm sure some atheist served in some of these wars.....RESPECT

These NFL players taking a knee while on the field and on the job is disrespectful of all of our nation's military, first responders, police officers, and firefighters. Kneeling while they were suppose to be honoring the fallen police officers is disgraceful. The NFL and anyone who is still supporting them by attending or watching them on TV are all cowards, sell-outs, and anti-American by their love of division and hatred in our country. If these millionaire players want to protest let them protest in a productive way on their own time. Kneeling does nothing to change a thing except for the attendance and income for those who depend on selling products at the games. Stop watching these overpaid athletes play ball and they will stop doing these antics. Like a two-year-old throwing a tantrum, walk away and ignore. They will stop once no one is paying attention. Furthermore, stop any government funding of the NFL! No more tax breaks on stadiums or for any other nonsense. Let them sink or swim on their own. They are billionaire organizations paying their employees millions of dollars and charging hundreds of dollars for tickets to watch them chase a ball up and down a field. Come on people, this is ridiculous and has gone on long enough. No more disrespect. No more tax breaks. No more tax dollars. No more NFL until they all start respecting We The People and the United State of America.

If only you "pro police people" had the same outrage towards Seth Spangler,Stephen Paddock,Hollis Daniels and Ian Howard who actually attacked cops by killing them.

@OfficerBlue I saw that yesterday, but it doesn't really bring clarity. It is only of one person apparently praying (not that that makes it better). I hate that guys are kneeling during the anthem. It made my blood boil hearing the Saints kneeled while honoring a fallen cop. But it is frustrating to have the truth shaped in a way we can't have honest conversations.

What is so surprising when members of the National Felon league Kneel? They are a bunch of bs retards who make millions and live in gated communities. They hate the police and regular America. If this country is so bad get out go live in China, Iran, or lovely Iraq. Total disrespect to the officers family and the country’s law enforcement across this nation. Kneeling on a moment of respect for the falling shows how the National Felon League is a bunch of pos’s. Where is the outcry for the hundreads shot and killed in Chicago past 6 months? And on stats more whites are killed by police than people of color. Where is race bater Al Sharpton on the genocide people of color are doing to one another in Chicago? City that resembles Iraq. More people are killed in Chicago in 30 days than U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq combined. The NFL needs to grow a spine. The fans should all walk out when they take a knee and let America nation wide see it. The NFL should not have a tax exempt status either, thats bs. First amendment only guards you against government censoring speech and expression not private institutions who want to show respect to the nation or the fallen.

Worse part of all this kneeling nonsense is football coaches around the country telling JR HIGH SCHOOL HIGH SCHOOL AND YOUNGER KIDS TO KNEEL IN SOLIDARITY. THATS THE MOST DISGRACEFUL THING TO SEE.

Isn't this the same coach who had to sit out a year for cheating? I haven't watched a game since I turned it off when Colin Cancer took a knee. I will never watch again. I proudly served in the Army to give these jerks the right to kneel, to protect their 1st amendments rights. BUT, do it on your own damned time, not company time. If I protested on my job, I'd be unemployed so fast I doubt my shoes would leave the building with me.

One Idea, these NFL or NBA players should go on a ride along in the cities. being that million $ houses are not like the streets of normal crime ridden areas, lets see what they do with the insults most or all police officer take every day
