Grand Rapids, MI – A woman will spend 30 days in jail after she ran over her nine-year-old son in a school parking lot and caused him to suffer a traumatic brain injury.
Tiffany Kosakowski, 36, pleaded guilty to reckless driving and was sentenced to six months in jail but had all but 30 days of the sentence suspended by Kent County Circuit Judge Curt Benson, according to the Associated Press.
At her sentencing on Thursday, Kosakowski said she must “live with this the rest of my life,” according to the Associated Press.
Judge Benson called her actions, “simply inexcusable.”
Kosakowski’s son didn’t want to stay at school that day, according to authorities.
The Holland Sentinel-Standard reported that the son followed his mother out of the school after he had been dropped off.
That's when Kosakowski told her son to go back to the school.
Police said that Kosakowski knew the boy was walking along side her SUV and she admitted that she moved the steering wheel and accelerated, according to the Holland Sentinel-Standard.
The boy hung from the passenger-side front door for about 50 yards before letting go when he lost his grip, according to the Associated Press.
After he let go, his mother ran him over.
Police said the rear tire of the car injured his head and torso, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The Holland Sentinel-Standard reported the boy suffered multiple skull fractures, bleeding on the brain and several bone fractures and had to be put on life support.
Judge Benson said he received about 30 letters in support of the mother prior to sentencing her.
The judge said he didn’t think many of those people would still support the mother if they watched surveillance video of the incident as he did.
