Atlanta, Georgia - 1-year-old baby girl, Skylar Fowler, died in the back seat of a hot car after her mother left her alone for six hours while she got her hair done on June 15. On that day, temperatures reached as high as 90 degrees.
Police said Dijanelle Fowler, 25, left the car running and the air conditioning on for her baby, but the car eventually shut off. When Fowler returned six hours later and found her baby dead, she asked for assistance from a man to start her car but hid the dead baby girl in the back seat by covering her with clothes, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Fowler is charged with second degree murder, child cruelty and concealing the death of Skylar Fowler, according to warrants, the newspaper reported.
During the hair appointment, Dijanelle Fowler security camera footage showed she entered the hair salon at 10:06 AM and left at 4 PM. Witnesses told police she never left the salon.
Police said she texted the child’s godfather she was going to urgent care for headaches and the mother did a Google search about seizures.
Fowler then went to the hospital and dialed 911. She didn’t mention her daughter, police said, but told 911 operator she was having a seizure, according to the New York Post.
When the police arrived, Skylar was dead in the back seat. Police said the medical examiner’s office said the baby had been dead “for some time,” the Atlanta newspaper reported. The baby’s obituary said she was a Charleston, S.C., resident.
Dijanelle Fowler was treated at the hospital and released. She was arrested on Monday and is being held on no bond.
