Men Who Bought 17,700 Sanitizers To Jack Up Price Now Under Investigation

The Tennessee attorney general ordered Matt and Noah Colvin to cease and desist price-gouging hand sanitizer products.

Hixson, TN – Two brothers who tried to take advantage of the coronavirus pandemic scare by buying up thousands of hand sanitizer products in Tennessee and Kentucky with the intention of price-gouging people ended up having to give away the more than 17,000 products they collected.

Brothers Matt and Noah Colvin started buying up hand sanitizer on March 1, the day the first death from coronavirus in the United State was announced, The New York Times reported.

Noah set out on a 1,300 mile road trip through Tennessee, and its neighboring state of Kentucky, buying up all the sanitizer products he could lay his hands on at Dollar Tree, Walmart, Staples, Home Depot and any other “little hole-in-the-wall dollar stores in the backwoods,” according to Matt.

“The major metro areas were cleaned out” when they were done, Matt told The New York Times.

In three days, Noah had filled a U-Haul truck with 17,700 bottles of hand sanitizer and packages of sanitizer wipes.

Matt said he posted 300 bottles of hand sanitizer on Amazon priced at between $8 and $70 each and sold them all right away, CBS News reported.

"It was crazy money," he told The New York Times.

But the celebration only lasted a little while because Amazon shut them down the next day, not long after Tennessee Governor Bill Lee declared a state of emergency that trigged an anti-price gouging law.

The brothers also found themselves the target of a firestorm of criticism on social media even before the state got involved.

"We will not tolerate price gouging in this time of exceptional need, and we will take aggressive action to stop it," Tennessee Attorney General Herbert H. Slatery III said in a statement.

Slatery sent the Colvins a letter telling them to cease and desist selling their ill-gotten gains, CBS News reported.

They have since given two-thirds of their stockpile to Calvary Chapel in Chattanooga and the remaining third is being held by the Tennessee Attorney General's office for distribution where needed, WRCB reported.

Matt told WRCB that it never occurred to them that their little scheme might harm other families.

But they are still under investigation by the Attorney General.

“I just want to make clear that donating the sanitizers does not mean they are off the hook legally. If evidence establishes they engaged in price gouging, we will seek appropriate penalties,” a representative with the Tennessee Attorney General’s office said, according to WSAW.

I went to the grocery store with my wife today.

Here we are in Redneckville, Virginia, and there is no milk nor toilet paper.

What the heck is wrong with people? We are not going Number Two more often. We have the same population as before. We have 67 confirmed cases in Virginia, and none near here.

People are really being irrational. Because everyone is a dufus these days.

I fail to understand why everyone is believing the global authorities and media.

The media told you that Trump was a Russian asset.

The health authorities quarantined a whole cruise ship, and over 1/3 of the passengers ended up getting it. For a long time, there were more cases on that ship, than the whole world outside of China. More cases on that ship than the whole world, because of the advice of these people who make $200k per year to tell you to wash your hands.

This is a coup. The Socialists can't win the election, so they are going to use a little respiratory virus to take over all forms of society, and make people reliant upon the government for handouts again.

The media is also loving it. They are regaining credibility, making a killing as people watch, and convincing everyone to tune in constantly for the latest updates.

I am really surprised that Trump is falling for it and playing along. I guess he has no choice since just about 100% of politicians are jumping on the crisis bandwagon.

[Conspiracy mode off]

I don't remember this kind of response to SARS, MERS, H1N1, bird flu, etc. People who cannot do math are so gullible.

Yes in our small county in South GA. the local walmart does not have a roll of toilet paper, a box of kleenex, or a roll of paper towels. I saw one lady with at least 10 gallons of milk and another with a buggy full of bread. This is the biggest scare since Y2K and Jim H. is correct, the liberals and the fake news press are loving it. This will hurt the economy (my 401k is down over 35%) and IF the dems win the Presidency the economy will not recover. Our only hope is to over kill this mess, then go back to current Republican policies to restart the economy. We should also stop all trade (especially essentials like meds) with Chine. Plastic toys... maybe but Iphones and meds NO. Without American buying Chinese goods and American companies running factories in China their economy would collapse in months and we'd be done with them.

Same here in AZ. I had to order a few rolls of toilet paper from Grainger all because everyone binge purchased all of the available toilet paper, water, hand sanitizer, paper towels, canned food, regular hand towels in place of TP, etc. We count ourselves blessed just to find basic foods to eat (turkey meat and bread).

another mouthpiece running it's neck! he obliviously didn't look at the price gouging law before making a statement! it is only in effect after an emergency is declared. it doesn't mean they CAN'T sell there items. as fare as amazon goes, those greedy fucks like to shut down there competition with BS rules and inapt monitoring software. all the while stockpiling there own warehouses.

How is this different when gas stations shoot the price of gas up when they paid no more for what’s already sitting in the ground?

I’ve been preparing for just such an emergency for some time so I wouldn’t be caught with my “pants down”🤣🤣🤣

Talk about price gouging, I went to my local Dollar General store and you could only buy three rolls of toilet paper and it was $1.00 a roll. This is not WWII, what the hell. The media has caused people to go crazy. What does water and toilet paper got to do with the coronavirus? NOTHING!!! I hope they stick it to these two guys.

The money they lost on sanitizers will be nothing compared to the legal fees. Glad they got caught.

Care to answer the question though? Are you for or against large corporations getting bailed out.

It's not a yes or no question. If the government unduly harms a company, the company should be made whole. And you typically can't sue the government since they are like the Almighty.

Details matter. I don't typically voice an opinion without hearing details and giving it some thought.

PS: Not sure why size matters to you so much. Typical Socialist hatred for successful companies that employ millions of people, fund the economy, and pay for all of the social programs, services, and facilities.

Never in my lifetime of 82 years have I seen and heard of such unwarranted panic. By citizens and by government officials. WWII response wasn't this bad.

Boy XX you sure are being trumpian! Also, more people die of the Corona Virus than the common flu! Three Republican senators, including senator Burr, went to a classified white house briefing on the virus. With the information they got, They immediately invested and he especially, bought millions of dollars of virus related stock.
They're being investigated for insider trading. So much for Republican conservatives concerned more on taking advantage of the pendemic for their own self greed. Democratic Socialism is good for most of us who live paycheck to paycheck. Socialism is not liberalism as the trump administration propaganda machine has been trying to portray Democrats as extreme, evil liberals. Bernie? Too much, Biden better. Trump? Pathological liar and narcissistic with zero empathy. Did you know that at cabinet meetings in the White House all members have to praise and say good things about Trump one by one before the meeting starts? So don't believe the lies that all democrats are evil snowflakes. Liberalism is a completely different animal.

The so called 'elites' must be laughing their asses off at the masses. How stupid can people get? Well this media hyped non-event panic is just a small sample. Human stupidity is as infinite as the cosmos. The govt says jump, and people ask, how high?
