An off-duty Philadelphia police detective shot a man who was running down pedestrians on Monday morning.

Philadelphia, PA – An off-duty uniformed detective shot a motorist who had rammed his vehicle into a pedestrian, and was attempting to mow down other citizens near an elementary school, on Monday morning.

The unnamed suspect was shot in the head, and is in critical condition, WCAU reported.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 29, when the unnamed Philadelphia Police Department (PDP) detective from the major crimes unit witnessed a black Honda trying to kill people.

“This driver was apparently attempting to run people over,” PDP Captain Sekou Kinebrew told WCAU.

The motorist then slammed into a 40-year-old pedestrian with enough force to throw him onto the Honda’s hood and into the windshield, The Inquirer reported.

A Good Samaritan witnessed the collision, and parked his or her own SUV in front of the suspect vehicle to prevent it from proceeding down the roadway, which allowed the detective to make contact with the 6 foot, 250 pound suspect, according to WCAU.

The man then attacked the detective, resulting in a physical altercation.

“He engages the male,” Capt. Kinebrew said. “The male gets out of the car and immediately attacks the off-duty detective. At that point, the off duty detective ... discharged one time, striking that male in the head.”

Capt. Kinebrew said the suspect was in “extremely critical condition.”

The injured pedestrian was transported for emergency medical care, and was in serious condition. He was expected to recover, police said.

Police said the suspect had a Virginia driver’s license, and that the vehicle was registered in Maryland.

Initial reports that the suspect had died were inaccurate, and no potential motive has been released, WTXF reported.

No comment has been made on if this is being investigated as an act of terrorism.

According to The Inquirer, the detective will be placed on administrative leave pending investigation by the PDP officer-involved shooting unit.

And Bloomberg's shills ("Everytown" and "Moms demanding Something-or-Other") will count it as an example of "gun violence," because they never bother with car violence or any other type of violence.

@Fire_and_Steel explain "car violence" and how you think there is enough of that to warrant some sort of movement.

Good job by the cop.

Fire_and Steel you don't need to explain "car violence" I think 99% of us get it. Thank you to all who participated in stopping this dangerous individual from harming others! I am especially grateful to the officer who stopped the threat--I hope permanently.

For Hi_est: There's no such thing; I was being ironical/sarcastic.. If groups like "[Fill in the blank] Against Gun Violence" were really concerned about violence, rather than trying to ban inanimate objects (guns), they might have more people agreeing with them. My point is that the problem is violence, no matter what the weapon is. (Car, knife, ANFO mixture, or a gun.) No "movement" is needed. While I'm at it, despite their high-falutin' names, the gun-ban groups don't know or do squat about "gun safety," either.

@Fire_and_Steel ah okay. I was gonna point out that fun violence is separate from just about any other violence because guns only have one use. Killing someone with a gun is what a gun is supposed to do. Killing someone with a vehicle, however, is a misuse of a vehicle.

Uh, idiot? Killing someone who is neither an enemy combatant or a criminal with a gun is perfectly acceptable, but your stupid implication that they are only for killing people is about as ignorantly stupid as you are.
As for killing people with vehicles, it's just as acceptable as doing the same with guns. Meaning it's not.
But that isn't going to stop people from being what they are.
Even if you aren't bright enough to figure that out.

@ProCop name another practical use for a gun then, if they were made to do more than shoot?
