A man set himself on fire at the White House but was not believed to have been a threat to President Trump

Washington, D.C. – A man in a motorized scooter set himself on fire at the White House at about 3 p.m. Friday before he was saved by the Secret Service.

"A male subject operating an electronic wheelchair-type scooter lit his outer jacket on fire while sitting along Pennsylvania Ave. outside the North Fence Line," the Secret Service stated in a Tweet, according to NBC.

The Secret Service put out the fire and gave first aid to the man, according to KNBN.

CBS reported the man had two suspicious packages near him that the police searched, but no information about the contents was released.

The White House was on lock down after the event and people were not allowed to enter or leave the premises.

The Secret Service said the man is suspected to have mental health problems and was treated for first-degree burns, according to CNN. The identity of the man has not been released.

President Donald Trump had a meeting with the Fraternal Order of Police Executive Board at the White House about the time when the incident was reported. President Trump was not in danger, according to the Secret Service.

The man's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, NBC reported.

Secret Service agents cleared the North Lawn of the White House after the man set himself on fire and asked that the media stay inside the West Wing.

“The fire set off a good amount of smoke that was visible from the White House North Lawn,” CNN White House correspondent Jeremy Diamond posted on Twitter, according to the New York Post. “Officers quickly scrambled to clear pedestrians from Pennsylvania Ave, running & shouting at people to clear the area.”

My God! Doesn't anyone have any empathy anymore? This man had an illness so bad, he had convinced himself that setting himself on fire was the answer. Maybe he is in dire straights, and felt that this was the best way to get somebody, ANYBODY, to listen to him. I feel sad for him and his family, and I hope he gets the help he so desperately needs, regardless of his political affiliation. There but for the Grace of God go I!
