Hermosa Beach, CA – A California man is in jail for attacking a man for wearing a red baseball cap which the owner claimed said “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) in Russian.
The incident occurred at about 6:40 p.m. on Sept. 2 in the bathroom at Tower 12 restaurant on Pier Avenue, the Daily Breeze reported.
The victim was using the bathroom when he was approached by 32-year-old David Delgado, who wanted to know what the writing on the hat said, according to the Hermosa Beach Police Department.
The man told Delgado what the hat said and Delgado attacked him.
He repeatedly punched the victim in the face and caused the victim to fall to the floor, according to the police report.
Police said that Delgado kept on hitting the man after the victim was on the ground, and then stole the Russian MAGA hat before making his exit.
The authorities identified the attacker by reviewing surveillance footage from the restaurant, the police report said.
Hermosa police said Delgado was arrested and taken into custody at his home in Winnetka without incident.
He was charged with suspicion of robbery and battery with serious injury, according to KTLA.
Hermosa police said Delgado was being held in jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
“It’s not clear who insulted who, but the hat is at the center of this whole mess,” Hermosa Police Sergeant Robert Higgins told the Daily Breeze.
The red hat with Russian characters became popular after actor Alec Baldwin posted a picture of himself on Instagram wearing one in 2017, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Baldwin has portrayed President Trump in numerous Saturday Night Live skits.
But CNN reported that the Russian phrase on the hat doesn’t actually say MAGA.
The four words in Russian translate to “Make America Fantastic Again.”
CNN reported that Baldwin had likely translated the phrase online.
"In fact, we just Google translated it, and it's translated exactly like on the cap," Moscow Bureau Chief Jill Dougherty said.
