Ice Cream Licker Gets 30 Days In Jail, Must Pay Restitution To Blue Bell
Port Arthur, TX – A 24-year-old Texas man was given 30 days in jail with $2,565 in fines and restitution after he posted a video of himself licking ice cream from a container in a store and putting it back in the freezer.
D’Adrien Anderson pleaded guilty to the crime March 4, according to CNN. He also must complete 100 hours of community service.
Anderson had taken a video of himself putting his finger in and licking a pint of ice cream in a Walmart and then putting it back on the shelf on Aug. 19, 2019, according to The News of Port Arthur.
However, Anderson claimed he did purchase the ice cream he had licked. Walmart surveillance video showed that Anderson did eventually purchase the ice cream, according to KTRK.
As a result of the incident, Blue Bell Creameries replaced all the ice cream in that display case that Anderson’s container came from at a cost of $1,565.
“Anderson’s actions caused public concerns about the safety and quality of consumer products offered for public consumption, impacted Blue Bell consumer confidence and caused the company financial loss,” the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office stated, according to The News of Port Arthur. “This type of activity will not be tolerated. The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office and the Port Arthur Police Department want the public to know that such cases will be taken seriously and appropriate criminal charges will be filed.”
Anderson had asked just for probation. He told KFDM that he wasn’t a bad person but just wanted the video to go viral. The video had 157,000 views on Facebook before it was taken down, according to the New York Post.
Blue Bell told CNN in a statement that the company was "pleased to see this matter had been resolved."
