Two Baton Rouge police officers were shot Sunday morning.

Baton Rouge, LA - A Baton Rouge police officer was fatally shot by a homicide suspect Sunday morning.

The incident occurred in the 1800 block of Pamela Drive at around 9:30 a.m. when officers responded to a tip to the location of 36-year-old Ronnie Cato, according to WAFB.

Cato was wanted for killing a relative earlier that morning.

While officers were checking the area, Cato opened fire on them, shooting two officers.

The officers were transported to the hospital where one succumbed to their injuries. The second officer is still being treated and their condition has not been released.

Officers got into a standoff with the barricaded suspect, and gunshots were heard in the area at around 4 p.m., according to WAFB. Officers later confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody.

The murdered officer was not identified, but the department said that he was a 21-year police veteran, according to WBRZ.
