Heroes Down: Two Officers Killed While Standing At A Scene

One officer had stopped to assist the other officer.

Montgomery County, MD - Two law enforcement officers were killed on Friday night when they were struck while standing on the shoulder of I-270 at the scene of a traffic crash, according to the Maryland State Police (MSP). They were off-duty at the time.

The incident occurred about 10 p.m. in Montgomery County. Police said that one off-duty officer called the Rockville Barracks of the MSP to report a single-vehicle crash in the high-speed lane of I-270 south, north of Gude Drive.

The officer, who stopped to help, and who was not involved in the crash, moved his personal vehicle behind the collision and turned on his emergency flashers.

A short time later, the officer learned that the driver involved in the crash was also in law enforcement.

Both officers moved to stand on the shoulder of the high-speed lane.

At that point, a southbound vehicle approached the scene of the crash, and swerved left onto the shoulder, apparently to avoid vehicles in the high-speed lane, according to WBAL.

The vehicle struck both officers and threw them over the jersey wall into northbound traffic. At least one of the officers was struck by a northbound vehicle.

One officer was pronounced dead at the scene. The second officer was transported to Suburban Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Montgomery County Fire Department has identified one of the officers as Sander Cohen, a Deputy Chief with the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, Maryland State Police, as well as a Lieutenant with the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department, according to WJLA.

The second officer was later only identified as an FBI agent.

Three people in the vehicle that initially struck both officers were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

The MSP is conducting the investigation and have said that there was no indication that alcohol was a factor.

No charges have been determined at this time.
