Walla Walla, WA - Walla Walla Police Officer Nicholas "Nick" Henzel died on Wednesday, May 24, from medical complications.
According to The Union-Bulletin, the WWPD announced Officer Nick Henzel's death "with great sadness and with an extremely heavy heart." He was 35-years-old.
In a statement, the Walla Walla PD said that they appreciated the condolences that had been shared, as they work through the grief of Officer Henzel’s unexpected death."
Officer Henzel's career of service began in 2000 with the U.S. Air Force. In 2006, he was hired by the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, where he served as a patrol deputy. In 2012, he was hired by the Walla Walla Police Department.
On their Facebook page they said,
"It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you that a member of our Department family, Police Officer Nick Henzel #294, unexpectedly passed away this morning. Nick passed from medical complications and was not on active duty. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Nick’s wife and two children.

He was also active in the community, volunteering as a wrestling coach, and with the Fraternal Order of Police 'Cops and Kids' program.
At the time of this writing there is no official way to donate to Officer Henzel's family. There have been reports of phone calls soliciting donations for his family and those phone calls are fraudulent. The police department is working on setting up a donation account at a local bank and they will announce when donations can be made.
Officer Nick Henzel is survived by his wife Cristal, and two children.
