Sussex County, VA - Sussex County Sheriff's Deputy Corey Fox, age 24, was found dead on Sunday, June 11, one day after Sheriff Raymond Bell's memorial was held.
Sussex County Sheriff's Captain Ernest Giles said that Deputy Fox died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No other details were released about his death, according to The Sussex-Surry Dispatch.
Deputy Fox was a three-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office, and worked as a corrections deputy at the Sussex County Jail. He was also a volunteer firefighter with Courthouse Volunteer Fire Department, Company 5.
Captain Giles said that Deputy Fox "..will be missed". He said “He was a hard worker and he was truly dedicated to his department.”
Deputy Fox's death occurred as the Sheriff's Office is 'reeling' from the unexpected death of Sheriff Bell on June 3.
Captain Giles that "As the men and women of the Sussex Sheriff’s Office continue to go about their duties to protect and serve the community of Sussex, grief counselors have been brought in from nearby Colonial Heights to help speak with deputies and others who may be struggling to deal with the sudden loss of two of their own."
This is a heavy loss for the small community. Sussex county's population is under 12,000 people.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Sussex County Sheriff's Office in their loss of Sheriff Bell and Deputy Fox, as well as the families of these fallen heroes.
Rest easy, heroes. We'll hold the line from here.
