Hero Down: Sheriff Steve Ackerman Killed

Lea County, NM - Lea County Sheriff Steve Ackerman was killed at around 7:30 PM Tuesday night.

Sheriff Ackerman was traveling to Santa Fe and was east of Encino on Highway 285 when his vehicle rolled. The cause of the collision is unknown at this time and under investigation.

Sheriff Ackerman was traveling to Santa Fe and was east of Encino on Highway 285 when his vehicle rolled. The cause of the collision is unknown at this time and under investigation.

The Lea County Sheriff's Officer released the following statement:
The Lea County Sheriff's Office is mourning after the loss of Sheriff Steve Ackerman. Sheriff Ackerman was involved in a motor vehicle crash on January 17, 2017, as a result of injuries sustained in the crash he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

We would like everyone to keep the Ackerman family in your prayers during their time of mourning.

The New Mexico State Police is completing the investigation into the crash and we request all inquiries be requested from their office.

We also ask that you keep the members of the Sheriff's Office in your thoughts, as we mourn the loss of Sheriff Ackerman.
Sheriff Steve Ackerman was sheriff for two and a half years. The veteran law enforcement officer is survived by his wife and two children.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Sheriff Ackerman's family and the Lea County Sheriff's Office.
