Bertie County, NC - Bertie Correctional Sergeant Megan Lee Callahan was murdered by an inmate on Wednesday evening.
According to WTKR, the incident occurred about 5:30 PM at the Bertie Correctional Institution. Sergeant Callahan, age 29, was attacked by inmate Craig Wissink.
Despite lifesaving efforts by first responders and Bertie Correctional staff, Sergeant Callahan died about 6:30 PM.
The details of the attack have not been released at this time. The State Bureau of Investigation and Windsor Police are handling the investigation, with a concurrent investigation being conducted by the Department of Corrections.
Wissink is serving a life sentence in prison after a first-degree murder conviction in Cumberland County. He has been in prison since April 2004. He has had six infractions since being incarcerated, including interfering with staff, disobeying orders, and fighting, according to WITN.
The Department of Public Safety Secretary Erik A. Hooks said:
“I am deeply saddened and send my heartfelt sympathies to Sergeant Callahan’s family. We will do all we can to support her family as well as the correctional family. The department will cooperate fully with the law enforcement investigation as well as conduct its own internal investigation.”
The State Bureau of Investigation is conducting the investigation.
Sergeant Callahan had been with the agency since January 2012. She was promoted to Sergeant in February 2016.
News Observer spoke with Sergeant Callahan's landlord who said, “She was a very sweet lady. Her personality was very jolly.” He added, "She worked all the time."
