Theresa, NY - New York State Police Trooper Joel Davis was murdered Sunday night after responding to a domestic disturbance involving gunfire. NYSP identified the killer as 32-year-old active duty Army Infantryman Justin Walters.
The incident started around 8 PM when NYSP got a call of shots fired at a home in Jefferson County Sunday night. Trooper Davis arrived and was approaching the home on foot when he was shot once by Walters and killed.
Walters surrendered to other officers and was taken into custody.
Justin Walters' wife, 27-year-old with Nichole Walters was found murdered in the home.
A neighbor who lives in a shed on a nearby property went outside when shots started was hit in the upper-torso by a bullet. Her injury is reported to be "minor."
Justin and Nichole Walters had a child together, and no information about the child has been released.
New York Governor Cuomo made a statement about Trooper Joel Davis's murder, saying, “Trooper Davis served as a member of the New York State Police for four years and his death is yet another sad reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face each day in order to protect our communities and serve the residents of this great state.”
State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said, “The death of Trooper Joel Davis is a terrible loss for all of New York. Trooper Davis was doing his job — protecting the community he serves. His family and loved ones, as well as the State Police, are in my thoughts.”
36-year-old Trooper Davis leaves behind a wife and three children.
