Hero Down: Maury County Sheriff's Deputy Jimmy Tennyson Succumbs to Injuries

Columbia, TN - Maury County Sheriff's Deputy Jimmy Tennyson died Saturday morning, May 6, 2017, from injuries that he received in a traffic collision on Friday.

According to Local Memphis, the incident occurred about 7:30 AM on Iron Bridge Road near Running Deer Drive.

Columbia, TN - Maury County Sheriff's Deputy Jimmy Tennyson died Saturday morning, May 6, 2017, from injuries that he received in a traffic collision on Friday.

According to Local Memphis, the incident occurred about 7:30 AM on Iron Bridge Road near Running Deer Drive.

Deputy Tennyson was on his way to McDowell Elementary High School when his vehicle left the roadway, went down a 35-foot embankment, and struck a group of trees, according to ODMP. No other vehicles were involved.

He was transported to Maury Regional Hospital for treatment, then transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Deputy Tennyson, age 64, passed away with his family at his side. He was a School Resource Officer at McDowell Elementary School.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is conducting the investigation.

"In a Facebook post, McDonnell Elementary School said:

“Our sorrow is without measure in the loss of our beloved friend, Officer Jimmy Tennyson. Officer Tennyson passed away early this morning, and we send our love and prayers to his family. His presence was woven into the fabric of our school and community, as his warm smile and servant’s heart were shared with us every day at McDowell Elementary School. We will miss him dearly."

In another Facebook post, the Maury County Sheriff's Department said:

"With absolutely broken hearts, we would like to update everyone on Deputy Jimmy Tennyson. We lost our friend and brother this morning to his battle for life.

Jimmy was involved in a single vehicle accident yesterday morning on Iron Bridge Rd. He was rushed to Maury Regional Hospital then to Vanderbilt Medical Center where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. He passed with his family by his side. Funeral arrangements are forthcoming.
