Goldsboro, NC - Goldsboro Police Major Jay Memmelaar, Jr., died after suffering a medical condition while on duty Thursday, February 16, 2017.
According to Officer Down Memorial Page, Goldsboro Police Major Jay Memmelaar was participating in his agency's physical fitness program at about 7:00 PM Thursday evening. He was working out in the department's gym when he began to experience discomfort in his chest.
Major Memmelaar returned to his office where he collapsed a short time later. He was transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital where he died. It was later determined that he had suffered a heart attack.
Goldsboro Police Major Jay Memmelaar was a 25-year veteran. He was 49-years-old and is survived by his wife and two children. He was head of the Police Department's Support Services Division, according to The Goldsboro News-Argus.
Mike West, Goldsboro Police Chief, said that he was a "great man" and "would be missed by many." In a written statement, Chief West said "both the Goldsboro Police Department and the city lost a great officer and a dear friend." He asked for continued prayers for the fallen Officer's family.
