Deputy Sean Cookson's wife was driving the deputy to mandatory training on February 22. There was heavy fog on highway 82 near Gideon road when Cookson's vehicle rear-ended the back of a vehicle that had stopped to make a left turn. Deputy Cookson's Chevrolet Silverado was then struck head-on by a Tahoe.

After the collision, Deputy Cookson was transported to the hospital where he held on for several days before succumbing to his injuries on Monday. The hero was surrounded by fellow law enforcement officers, his wife, and family when he died.

A memorial fund has been set up in Deputy Cookson's name at First National Bank of Vinita. You may contact them if you would like to make a donation.
