Comal County, Texas - Comal County Corrections Officer Cynthia Young was killed off-duty on July 4 after being struck by a drunk driver.

Corrections Officer Cynthia Young had just finished watching fireworks with her family in Marble Falls and was walking back to her car. A drunk driver ran a stop sign and hit Corrections Officer Young, according to KENS5.

The driver fled the scene after hitting the hero. C.O. Young was transported to the hospital where she died from her injuries.

Thomas Pfeifer, Jr., 33, was identified by witnesses as the driver, and he turned himself in the next day. Pfeifer is being charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death.

The Comal County Sheriff's Office posted the following message to Facebook:

Our Comal County family lost one of its own last night. It is with great sadness in our hearts that we learned of the passing of Corrections Officer Cynthia Young on July 4th, 2017.

Cynthia and her family were in Marble Falls yesterday afternoon to watch and enjoy the fireworks show. After the show was over Cynthia and her family were headed back to their car. Her family safely crossed however Cynthia was tragically struck by a drunk driver who ran a stop sign. Cynthia was transported to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.

Cynthia began her career here at the Sheriff’s Office as a member of the Nursing Staff in 2009. She later transitioned to Corrections Officer in 2012 after medical services were contracted out.

Cynthia always had a smile and was a valuable member of the Sheriff’s Office. She was loved by many. We shall miss her a lot. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family during this time of great sorrow.
