Sacramento, CA - California Highway Patrol Officer Lucas Chellew was killed during a pursuit on Wednesday night, February 22, 2017.
The incident occurred around 5:45 PM near Stockton Boulevard and Fruitridge Road. CHP Officer Lucas Chellew, age 31, was chasing a fleeing motorcyclist on eastbound Fruitridge Road when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed, according to KCRA. An unconfirmed report said that his motorcycle struck a pole.
First responders worked tirelessly to save his life. California Highway Patrol Officer Chellew was transported to the University of California - Davis Medical Center where he died at 6:11 PM.
Police have closed Fruitridge Road between Stockton Boulevard and 56th Street. It is expected to remain closed for hours. The fleeing motorcyclist was not located, and no arrests have yet been made.
CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said “My heart aches on this terribly tragic day for the CHP as we have lost a hero, who swore a sacred and honorable oath to serve and protect the people of California."
CHP Officer Lucas Chellew was an eight-year veteran of the agency. He was assigned to the South Sacramento division. He leaves behind a wife, a daughter, and a son. Officer Chellew's father is a retired CHP Captain and his sister is a CHP Officer. He was a 2003 graduate of Bear River High School.
Officer Lucas Chellew was an Army veteran, having served for five years and attaining the rank of Sergeant.
The Sacramento Police Department is assisting the California Highway Patrol in the investigation.
