El Paso, TX - Border Patrol Agent Isaac Morales, age 30, died on Thursday, May 25, after being stabbed in the eye earlier in the week, during what is believed to be a targeted attack.
According to KVIA, the incident occurred shortly before 2 AM on Saturday, May 20, in the parking lot of the Union Drafthouse Bar in the 12000 block of Tierra Este. Agent Morales was off-duty and was with his girlfriend and another couple.
They were walking to their cars when the suspect, Hisaias Justo Lopez, "initiated" a confrontation with Agent Morales, without any "provocation." He identified himself as a Border Patrol Agent, and Lopez began stabbing him. Police said that Lopez ran from the scene, and that Agent Morales and 'his friend' chased him. Other witnesses joined in the chase.
While fleeing, Lopez turned once and stabbed Agent Morales in the eye. Witnesses continued chasing Lopez for about another block, when they caught him and held him until police arrived.
Agent Morales was transported to a local hospital, where he remained in critical condition until he died.
Lopez was initially charged with Criminal Attempted Murder, but that charge will now be upgraded to Murder. He is in custody at the El Paso Detention Facility under $500,000 bond.
Border Patrol Agent Isaac Morales was an eight-year veteran of the Border Patrol.
