Health Commissioner Tells NYPD 'I Don't Give Two Rats' -sses About Your Cops'

“I don’t give two rats’ -sses about your cops,” Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot said. "I need them for others."

New York, NY – The New York City health commissioner refused to contribute a portion of her office’s stash of surgical masks to New York police when NYPD Chief Terence Monahan made a desperate plea for them back in March.

“I don’t give two rats’ -sses about your cops,” New York Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot told Chief Monahan, according to WNYW. “I need them for others.”

Chief Monahan had requested 500,000 surgical masks, and Barbot eventually agreed to hand over just 50,000, the New York Post reported.

The heated conversation took place during a phone call in late March, sources told the paper on Wednesday.

When Chief Monahan made the request, the number of NYPD officers who were falling ill and testing positive for the novel coronavirus was rising sharply, but none of the officers had succumbed to COVID-19 at the time, the New York Post reported.

As of Wednesday night, 41 of the 5,490 NYPD employees known to have contracted the virus have died.

During an Office of Emergency Management meeting in March, Chief Monahan told New York Mayor Bill de Blasio that the police department was desperately in immediate need for personal protective equipment (PPE).

“For weeks, we haven’t gotten an answer,” the chief said, according to the New York Post.

A source told the paper that De Blasio then turned to Barbot and asked her what the police chief was talking about.

“You definitely need it,” the mayor told Chief Monahan. “Oxiris, you’re going to fix this right now.”

At the time, Barbot was sitting on a stash of ventilators, masks, and other equipment that the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene had in storage in New Jersey, according to the New York Post.

The NYPD was ultimately able to get 250,000 masks from City Hall, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) kicked in disinfectant and Tyvek suits, the New York Post reported.

De Blasio yanked the city’s coronavirus tracing and major testing program from Barbot’s office last week and announced that the public hospital system would oversee the project instead.

Barbot, who has been a consistent participant in de Blasio’s daily briefings, was not present when the announcement was made, the New York Daily Post reported.

Department of Health Press Secretary Patrick Gallahue said that Barbot made the statement about not giving “two rats’ -sses” about the NYPD because she was stressed about the spread of the pandemic.

“During the height of COVID, while our hospitals were battling to keep patients alive, there was a heated exchange between the two where things were said out of frustration but no harm was wished on anyone,” Gallahue said, according to the New York Post. “[Barbot] apologized for her contribution to the exchange.”

Police Benevolent Association (PBA) President Patrick Lynch called Barbot’s comments “despicable and unforgivable,” and demanded that she be fired.

“Dr. Barbot should be forced to look in the eye of every police family who lost a hero to this virus,” Lynch declared. “Look them in the eye and tell them they aren’t worth a rat’s ass.”

“She should’ve been fired the moment she uttered those words,” he said, according to WNBC. “She must resign or be fired immediately now.”

U.S. Congressman Max Rose also called for Barbot’s ouster.

“Dr. Barbot shouldn’t resign, she should be fired,” Rose tweeted on Wednesday night.

Detective’s Endowment Association (DEA) President Paul DiGiacomo said that Barbot’s comments and attitude placed first responders at an even greater risk of harm.

“The Detectives’ Endowment Association is calling on Mayor de Blasio to immediately fire Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot for not only her despicable remarks but for endangering our men and women in blue who are tirelessly protecting New Yorkers during this pandemic,” DiGiacomo said, according to WNYW.

“A so-called city leader, Dr. Barbot showed her true colors as a cop-hater. Five brave NYPD Detectives died as the DEA searched for protective equipment to purchase for our members while we waited for the city to distribute masks," the DEA said in a statement, according to WNBC.

"Dr. Oxiris Barbot’s shameful behavior likely contributed to the further spread of this deadly virus,” the union added. “She has brought great shame to New York City government and every medical professional who is courageously fighting the Coronavirus pandemic alongside our cops."

The Sergeant’s Benevolent Association (SBA) said that Barbot is responsible for NYPD deaths.

“Truth is this b--ch has blood on her hands but why should anyone be surprised the NYPD has suffered under DeBlasio since he became Mayor,” the union tweeted on Wednesday night.

De Blasio scoffed at the SBA’s comment, calling it “divisive” and “absolutely unacceptable,” the New York City Patch reported.

The NYPD refused to comment on the situation, according to the New York Post.

On Thursday, de Blasio said he first learned about Barbot’s comment to Chief Monahan on Wednesday night, WNBC reported.

"No public servant should ever in any way say anything disrespectful about the men and women of the NYPD," de Blasio said during his daily press conference. "To me it would be inappropriate for anyone, particularly in a leadership role, to suggest any lack of interest in protecting the men and women of the NYPD. That to me would be a real inappropriate statement."

The mayor said he is looking into the details of what occurred and that he plans to gather information directly from Barbot and Chief Monahan, WNBC reported.

“The data show that involvement with the criminal justice system — even brief contact with the police or indirect exposure — is associated with lasting harm to people’s physical and mental health,” city Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot told BuzzFeed News.

Well, she has a lot of moxie speaking so plainly about this issue of whether policemen are better than regular citizens. I don't know whether a more diplomatic phrasing would have made things better or worse or made things just essentially the same.

Simply stated: The life of a Law Enforcement Officer is of NO consequence to her, more like a Dixie cup. Use [once] and discard. She needs to be seriously smacked down.

Why is deblowme just finding out about this? If that's true, why didn't the commissioner tell him during one of the daily meetings they surely had? Something doesn't add up with the mayor's response.

Mr Mayor, since you claim to back the NYPD, maybe you should fire the commissioner, as she refused to provide city employees with PPE that she was storing in NJ. You constantly said that Trump was not giving NYC the PPE that it needs, when it turns out that you had the PPE in storage the entire time.... your DOH commissioner just wasn't giving it to the front line staff.

It was a good move to remove her control away from the situation. She seems too emotional and ill equipped psychologically to deal with her pandemic duties.

Dr. Barbot should be fired, from her job. I believe that all First-Responders , should be given any protection that they need, when they have to go to the aid of the people who need help. Keeping our Police and Fire & Rescue teams safe from such an horrific disease, as Covid-19, and any other life-threatening event that may rear its ugly head. If our First Responders are not respected by their own ' great leaders ", those " great leaders " should go on the ambulances and fire trucks, and in the squad cars, etc., and see how brave those " great leaders ", really are, when having to face infected citizens, without any protection, just as those officers had to do, that caused them to lose their lives, for no good reason. In my book I believe that those " great leaders ", should be held accountable for the deaths of those officers.
As for " RunCop " you are a sad excuse of a man, for writing such vulgar and demeaning statements, as you posted, above. Shame on you, and all others who have that same attitude, because such garbage only comes from people who have no sense of common decency, or any sense of morality. If you think for one moment that you are better than everyone who is " Liberal " and female, you are in for a very rude awakening. If any child that I have ever taken care of had spoken, as an adult to me, as you just wrote, I would have dressed him down, for being the most ugly-spirited, ignorant, and clueless person, in the universe. I would also remind them that it was " liberals ", who formed this nation. It was " Liberals " who passed laws to help American citizens be recompensed, fairly for their work, so they could give better lives to their families. It was also " Liberals ", who fought for minimum wages, medical care benefits, for the employees, and the list goes on. By the way, RunCop, are you looking forward to retiring, one day, and collecting your Social Security? After all, all of us who have worked most of our lives, for others, have paid into Social Security, so that once we are able to retire, that money that the government is supposed to protect, is our money to see us and our families through, the rest of our lives. This was put in place, by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a Democrat...a " Liberal ". I actually am sad for you, that your heart and mind are so filled with such disrespect, against so many people...many of whom would willingly come to your aid, if you ever needed help, of any sort. Would you turn away from some woman, who offered you help, in some emergency? I would hope that your words, above, would not spew from your mouth during an emergency you would be involved in. Oh, I almost forgot, one of our nation's greatest Presidents was Abraham Lincoln, and he was a real Republican.
So, dear sir, I am praying for you and all those whose concepts of life are so hateful, of others. I also pray that you never have to face such ugly and hurtful words, as you as stated here.
I am seventy-three, and my life has be full of terrible and ugly things happening to me, by others, including having had my life threatened, ( ...if you don't shut up, I will kill you! " ), by one of the men who were assaulting me, because I was fighting them. I obeyed the command, and I shut down, and when it was over, for the next three days I didn't sleep or eat. Friends finally stepped in and helped me find the strength to pull myself together, and not let that ugly bully win...ever. If you have women and girls in your family, I hope you have some modicum of respect, for them, than the way you expressed yourself, in your comment. I think you should begin to think better of yourself, before ever saying such ugly things, about others, and perhaps, whatever hurts have fallen on you, during your life, you will be able to let all that hurt slip away, from you. Believe me, I really do know what I am saying to you. God bless you, sir, and may God bless all of our First-responders, and keep them all safe. I also am praying for all who died, or are suffering the terrible disease that has hit our world. This is a time to pull together, and protect and love one another, as every faith instructs us all to do. Unconditional love is the only thing that is important, now, and in the future. Peace be with all of us, every day, so that we may be able to help others, in their time of need.

Cry me some blue tears. How many times have I heard police officers like Ed 'The Irish Dummy' Mullins and Patrick 'Grand Wizard' Lynch say utterly stupid and insensitive nonsense? Ultimately, the good doctor, Health Commissioner Dr Oxiris Barbot will remain unscathed and her sterling reputation untarnished. This is being blown way out of proportion. I'm sick and tired of police officers bitching and claiming to be victims. I'm sure His Honor, Mayor De Blasio had no idea about what the good doctor was going to say.

Law enforcement has a difficult job. Unfortunately the tactics used by anti police is consistent. They don't understand that when they blame laws for incarceration, they are no better than those that insist that criminal activity is in our nature of Afroamerican men. Labeling law enforcement as the enemy is not the solution. In my old Brooklyn they named playgrounds after drug dealers turned rappers. Then wonder why the young see Gangsta activity as heroes. People that would put a bullet in your face in a heartbeat. We had a 3 year old shot by 45m when it passed through wall and closet. The shooters were under 18 and released to parents. No one cared because the kid lived. They are out of control and the Summer is just starting
