Gunman Murders Deputy, Shoots Another, Then Livestreams Standoff
Clermont County, Ohio - One Clermont County deputy was murdered and another was wounded in a gunfight with a suspect late Saturday night into early Sunday morning.
The incident started just before 7 p.m. Saturday night with a 911 call from a man who said he believed somebody was in his apartment at 360 St. Andrews Drive. The caller said he was armed and suicidal.
Deputies arrived and made contact with 23-year-old Wade Edward Winn, who opened fire on them. The suspect then started livestreaming on Instagram.
This led to a standoff with SWAT, and witnesses reported hearing gunshots during the standoff, according to WLWT. The suspect said during the livestream that he had exchanged gunfire with police multiple times.
"They kicked in the door. I shot two of them. They did not return fire at that time," Winn said during the livestream. "They have now fired back at me, but only once or twice. They have no idea where I'm at. I've now shot multiple, multiple times."
During the incident, two deputies were shot by the suspect.
The deputies were transported to UC Medical Center where one of them succumbed to their injuries.
Winn was taken into custody after 6 a.m.
The deputy who was murdered has been identified as Detective Bill Brewer, according to WLWT. He leaves behind a wife and 5-year-old son.
"Deputy Brewer gave his life attempting to help a person who was admittedly suicidal. This will forever change the atmosphere of the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office” Sheriff Steve Leahy.
The wounded deputy was identified as Lt. Nick DeRose. He has been treated for his wounds at the hospital and released.
