Gunman Ambushes, Opens Fire On Florida Deputy

A Marion County deputy was the target of a shooting Sunday morning.

Citra, FL - Marion County Sheriff's Office has announced that one of their deputies was shot at in an unprovoked attack Sunday morning.

The deputy responded to a call at the Paradise Bar and Lounge located at 13007 North US Highway 441 at around 2:00 a.m.

Deputy Joseph Spratlin attempted to disperse a crowd at the bar, when suddenly the deputy and the crowd around him came under fire.

An unidentified suspect fired numerous rounds, which struck the deputy's patrol car as he took cover behind it with other citizens.

Backup arrived and they were unable to locate the suspect. It's believed that nobody was hit in the shooting.

The sheriff's office says that the deputy was unable to return fire during the shooting because he was working on getting nearby citizens to cover.

Authorities are attempting to locate eyewitnesses who may have more information about the shooting.

“Enough is enough,” Sheriff Billy Woods said in a statement. “A law enforcement officer’s worst fear came true in Gilchrist County last week, and I can tell you that all of my people are on edge. The shooting early this morning hits us right here at home and this type of senseless violence has got to stop. Every single day, all of us in law enforcement, whether we wear green, blue or black and tan uniforms, leave our families to serve and protect you, our citizens. I implore you to at least help us protect you from those who commit crimes like this. Whoever committed this crime last night is a danger to us all. Someone needs to do the right thing and turn that person, or persons, in TODAY.”

Anybody with information on the shooting is asked to call Marion County Crime Stoppers at 352-368-STOP. Reference 18-29 in your tip and you may be eligible for a cash reward.

Really, stricter gun laws!? Don't believe it, bad people don't follow the laws. Guns will ALWAYS be available under the table!

In Wisconsin they just gave 2 inviduals low bail amounts after attacking 2 officers. The male was being arrested for parole violation, resisted, beat cops and got bail. ??

The female threatened to kill the cops while brandishing a knife..bail $50,000. ??

Big deal! Can't wait to see their punishment...if they even make it to court!!

Kudos to the lady who helped the officers by holding the female down til backup arrived!!

Was this officer trying to disperse a bar closing time crowd by himself? It certainly sounds like it, and from a tactical standpoint it shouldn’t happen. To the person who said he wasn’t ambushed, does it really matter if this strictly meets the criteria for being ambushed? They shot at him, that’s all that matters, period.

@nagy1909 yes it matters. ambush has a specific definition, and this wasn't an ambush. though it's being reported like it is.

I disagree, put yourself in his shoes, do you think he cares how the media may be portraying it? Someone blatantly tried to kill a police officer, and if the person who did the shooting called the police to the scene, then it IS an ambush, point is, we don’t know for sure, but either way, that person tried to end the life of a police officer. THAT’S what really matters here, not the mechanism, just the simple fact that again, someone tried to shoot a cop.

Again, your stupidity aside, we don’t know that it WASN’T an ambush. If the person who called in the disturbance was the person doing the shooting, then it WAS, beyond a doubt, an ambush. The failing of this article is that it doesn’t mention this, possibly is an unknown at the time of the article. With all the anti-police hype the liberal media spews, I’ll give the benefit of the doubt here, though in the end, they might be wrong. Until then, well, we don’t know for sure yet.

@nagy1909 Are you making up facts to this story? Where are you getting that the shooter called the cops? Step out of your fantasy world and put your emotions away for a second, clown.

And if you're going to call me stupid, please respond to the right comment, dumbfuck.

@Ba allill by the way you typed that, I could easily believe you're about as stupid as you stated.

Perhaps you missed the word, “if.” Reading comprehension not one of your strong points.

Even if was the shooter who called police, it still wouldn't be an ambush because the shooter was not laying in wait in a concealed place. I struggle with the issue of whether the deputy should have run toward the gunfire (instead of hiding) because it was an active shooter situation. It will be interesting to see if he gets discipline for not engaging.

All you do is comment on everything playing a mixture of devil's advocate and a miserable troll. I don't know why people humor you by trying to explain what they mean after you take everything out of context. You're a tool, and you obviously need a real hobby.

I have to say that since the shooter wasn't seen nor has been identified, he most surely was using at least concealment, if not cover as well, which would constitute an ambush.
And to rush blindly towards an unknown shooters, or shooters, in an unknown location would have been stupid at best, and fatal at worst.

No, that is not what "concealment" means.

No, i didn't miss it. If the shooter didn't have the gun, he wouldn't have a shot. You could change any statement you want if you add hypotheticals. You're adding them then basing your argument off of them.

You kind of have to do them nationwide for them to really work.

Easy to say while you are sitting in an easy chair in front of the TV. I don't expect you have ever been under fire or ever put your life on the line for anything or anyone. You should not talk about things you obviously know nothing about.
