Gunman Ambushes Cop Driving Down Road; Cop U-Turns, Takes Would-Be Killer Out

A Fremont police officer was ambushed while he was out on patrol on Thursday night.

Fremont, CA – A Fremont police officer was ambushed by a pedestrian as he was out on patrol late Thursday night.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:50 p.m., as the unnamed officer was traveling southbound down Civic Center Drive, the East Bay Times reported.

As he approached the crosswalk intersection near Washington Hospital, the officer “noticed a lone male emerge from the east side of the civic center,” Fremont Police Captain Fred Bobbitt said during a press conference early Friday morning.

The male suddenly “pointed a firearm, and fired rounds at or officer,” Capt. Bobbitt told reporters. “The officer’s vehicle was actually struck by gunfire.”

Immediately after he came under fire, the officer made a U-turn, and stopped his patrol car.

He then “deployed his rifle and engaged the suspect,” who was attempting to hide behind a large planter, the captain said.

The officer returned fire, and the gunman collapsed to the ground.

“It’s clear that this officer was driving, was ambushed, and thankfully had the training to not just protect himself, but to protect the community,” Capt. Bobbitt added.

Two additional officers arrived at the scene, as the wounded gunman writhed around on the ground.

He ignored their orders to hold still, and instead began moving towards his handgun, which was lying on the ground in plain view.

“The suspect crawled toward the firearm, actually grabbed onto the firearm, pointed it at our officers, and both of our officers fired at the suspect, striking him,” Capt. Bobbitt said.

Just 17 minutes after the confrontation began, the unnamed gunman was pronounced dead.

The officers were not injured during the shootout.

“This is a very unfortunate incident. An extremely dangerous incident,” the captain said. “We very well could have lost not just one, but several officers tonight.”

Police said they do not know what the gunman’s motive was, KGO reported.

The Fremont Police Department said it plans to release additional information, as well as bodycam footage of the officers’ encounter with the gunman, by early next week, according to The East Bay Times.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office will conduct a parallel investigation into the officer-involved shooting, the department said.

Although the investigation is still ongoing, Capt. Bobbitt said he is confident that the shooting was justified, KGO reported.

"We, as an organization, do not like to use deadly force. Understand that. We train our officers with less lethal tools, we train them in de-escalation,” he explained. “But you have to understand this was an incident where deadly force was appropriate. This individual tried to kill three Fremont police officers who were just trying to protect the community.”

So no injuries were sustained by the officers as for the perp he got exactly what he asked for. If you are a little puppy you never attack a wolf hunter. Justice was firm justice was served.

Sounds like the officer did a great job under extreme pressure. What I hate is afterwards the Chief feels the need to try to justify his officers actions to the very few who would question why the officer didn't use a slingshot instead of a gun.

Justice was served quickly and efficiently. No court, no appeals, no plea bargains, no lengthy incarceration, and especially no whiny, sniveling commentary from the usual suspects franchise .

Thank God these officers were not hurt . It could of turned out differently if not for the quick training of both officers.I say they did a tremendous job protecting them self and others.

Here's some advice for the inevitable meatheads who will whine that the officers should have subdued the man with "less-than-lethal" means - when somebody tries to kill you, do your best to try to kill him back.

Thank goodness our officers are okay and got to go home to their families!! And I'm glad this piece of s--t is dead!! Yes, dead!!! He started it by firing at an officer for no reason. Now the tax payers won't have to pay for a trial, appeals or lengthy incarceration!!

Two rules for a gun fight, first-bring a gun, second-bring friends with guns. Good job.

What was the gunman's motive? Suicide by cop, probably fueled by drugs. Who keeps crawling towards a gun with cops all around? A soon to be dead man.

The spokesman says they don't yet know what the motive was for this shooting!? Really!!?? How about all the venomous rhetoric being spewed by some of our politicians? How about that same venomous rhetoric being spewed by our media and so called "entertainers?"

Hopefully the dead want to be cop killers relatives don't come flying out of the woodwork stating they ambushed him. It's just a matter of time. Lets hope the mayor doesn't fold under the pressure. I am glad the Officer is fine. Good Job.

You're exactly right! Premier Barak started this war with his first comments, "The police acted stupidly." He further promoted this war by his silence toward police ambushes and killings, and his vocal empathy expressed toward those killed by police - irregardless of the perpetrators actions leading up to their killing.
