Good Samaritan Murdered By Teens He Was Trying To Help

A man was murdered when he stopped to help some teenagers.

Centreville, IL - An East Metro man was murdered when he stopped to help some teenagers.

Police said that Johnny Lovett, 60, pulled his car over to give money to a group of four teenagers on Nov. 24, near the intersection of South 55th Street and Church Road in Centreville.

Instead of thanking Lovett for his random act of kindness, the group of teenagers robbed and fatally shot their Good Samaritan, and left him to die.

Lovett’s car hit a tree, rolled into a ditch, and caught fire, according to KMOV.

His body was discovered after firefighters extinguished the fire around 4:45 p.m., said Centreville Police Detective Sergeant DeMarius Thomas. An autopsy to determine the cause of death is expected to be completed Sunday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

"It was very heart-wrenching. It wasn't until they actually pulled the body out of the weeds and put him in a body bag that reality set in,” Lovett's niece, Karla Perry, said.

Lovett, a Centreville native, left behind a wife and a teenage son. He was a member of Iron Workers Local Union 392.

Family and friends remembered Lovett as someone who was kind to everyone.

"The memories, that's all we have to go on now. It's very unfortunate, but we do have the memories and we appreciate that. Not everyone has a chance to have memories with loved ones. We have great memories, and that's the most important thing,” Perry said.

"When you saw him come in you knew that the party was going to start," she said.

"You knew that you were going to be loved on,” Perry said.

The Centreville Police Department said that they have arrested three out of the four suspects responsible for Lovett's murder, and their investigation is ongoing.
