Greenville, TX – Tiani Warden, the former wife of actor Gary Busey, was found dead in a jail cell in the Hunt County Detention Center on Nov. 4, 2019.
The Hunt County Sheriff’s Office told TMZ that Quinlan Police Department officers responded to a 911 call about a woman lying in a ditch on Nov. 3, 2019.
The woman in the ditch was Warden.
Police determined she was intoxicated and called an ambulance but when medics arrived on the scene, Warden refused treatment, TMZ reported.
So instead of going to the hospital, she was arrested for public intoxication and taken to the Hunt County Detention Center.
The sheriff’s office confirmed the in-custody death and released information about the woman’s identity on Wednesday, the Herald Banner reported.
“On November 4, 2019 at approximately 2:30 p.m. Ms. Warden was found unresponsive in her cell,” the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. “The Detention Officers and Medical Staff on duty immediately began life saving measures until AMR arrived on scene and took over. Ms. Warden was transported by AMR to Hunt Regional Medical Center continuing life saving measures during transport.”
Warden, who was 52, was pronounced dead at the hospital, the Herald Banner reported.
Justice of the Peace Wayne Money supervised the inquest and ordered the autopsy, KLTV reported.
The autopsy report ruled that Warden’s death in custody was an “accident.”
The Dallas County Medical Examiner determined that Warden died in her jail cell from a cocaine overdose, TMZ reported.
The medical examiner said that Warden’s chronic alcoholism also contributed to her death.
Busey’s ex-wife had had previous run-ins with law enforcement when she was drinking.
Warden was arrested for intoxication twice within 10 hours in Tyler in June of 2019, KETK reported.
She was taken into custody at 3 p.m. on June 8, 2019 and was released on a $500 bond.
Just hours after her release, at 1 a.m. on June 9, 2019, Warden was arrested again on the same charge, according KETK.
She was released for a second time on another $500 bond.
The former actress was married to Busey from 1996 until 2001, according to TMZ.
Warden starred beside Busey in several movies including "The Chain," "The Rage," “Plato’s Run,” and "Rough Riders."
“First and foremost, my thoughts and prayers are with the family of Tiani Warden during a very difficult time,” Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks said in the press release. “I want to commend the detention officers that did everything they could to revive Tiani Warden and following their training and protocols put in place.”
